Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal's first career NFL interception was a memorable one that helped his team shift the momentum in their favor. Not only was it Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson's first interception of the season, but it was also a play that left Chiefs HC Andy Reid in complete and utter awe. Speaking to reporters after the game, Reid made mention of Chenal's interception in his opening monologue.

"Leo's interception was incredible, just as being a football fan, that was an incredible play," Reid said. "Proud of him and the job that he did."

Chenal blanketed Ravens All-Pro tight end Mark Andrews in coverage on the play, resulting in an acrobatic one-handed interception down the right sideline.

Turnovers were a central point of emphasis for the Chiefs after they failed to produce any during the team's 0-2 start to the season. In the past two weeks, the Chiefs have managed to force four turnovers at key junctures of the game, winning both the turnover battle and the game in the process.

Chenal's interception against Andrews came as the Ravens were driving down the field, leading the game 7-3. While the ensuing drive only resulted in a second field goal for Kansas City, it gave the Chiefs something that they never surrendered the rest of the night: Momentum.

"It was big," Reid said. "I thought it was just all the way around, momentum included. But a spectacular play period. Athletic."

Asked whether he knew that Chenal had such receiving ability, Reid had the perfect quip in response.

"Not with one, not with one hand," Reid said. "Sometimes he struggles with two hands. This was a good one. This was a good one."

Rest assured that after this impressive interception, Reid will be thinking of ways to get Chenal a catch on offense in the future. They already have a full-house backfield look that features Chenal as a fullback.

Chiefs LB Leo Chenal's Quick Facts:

  • 24-year-old third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Wisconsin.
  • Had recorded forced fumbles and passes defended, but had never recorded an NFL interception before Sept. 28, 2025, vs. the Ravens.
  • Playing in the final year of his rookie contract.

Chiefs LB Leo Chenal's versatility knows no bounds

In this particular game, LB Leo Chenal's task was to shut down Ravens TE Mark Andrews. In past games against Baltimore, he had acted as a spy against Ravens QB Lamar Jackson. In other games, he is primarily used as a defensive end, rushing the passer. Other times, he's strictly an off-ball outside linebacker.

Chiefs DT Chris Jones spoke about his versatility and how it's a special part of the current iteration of Steve Spagnuolo's defense.

"Leo (Chenal), he's a special individual," Jones said. "We ask Leo to do a lot for us. Sometimes you may see him line up as a shade. He would... watch the Philadelphia Eagles game. He was lined up as a zero over the center. So, Leo's one of those guys who, he's very durable and special for the success of our defense. Today, we asked him to go and cover one of the best tight ends in the league (Ravens TE Mark Andrews), and obviously, that ended in the pick. So, Leo, he's a special kid."

Chenal is slated to become a free agent after the 2025 NFL season, and it's plays like this that add to his ever-growing toolkit and value.
