The Kansas City Chiefs are in the grind of training camp.
Andy Reid has a reputation for running one of the most grueling camps among all coaches in the NFL. Even though it isn't always fun, Reid's players respect his tough practices, realizing how much they pay off down the line.
While speaking to the media following Day 6 of training camp, cornerback Trent McDuffie discussed how the team gets through the hard times and come out better at the end.
"I think every year is a new year, and you kind of want to prove that you still have it," McDuffie said. "Even in the nickel, I feel like I still have something to prove. Even when I'm outside, I feel like I have something to prove. Anytime you step on this field, I think this whole team really feels like they have something to prove. I think that makes it a little bit easier when you go out there and see the guy to your left, the guy to your right, all giving 100 percent effort.
"This year for me, it's really about how will I can be consistently doing my job week in and week out," McDuffie continued. "I know things happen throughout the season, but not letting those small bumps affect me mentally, not letting those small bumps knock me off of what I was originally doing, and continue to push through and keep thriving. That's what we do here in St. Joe (St. Joseph, MO). You got to push through these hot days, you got to push through these long drive drills. That's something that I really respect about Coach Reid. I think it really helps us for the season."
One of the things that separates Reid from other great NFL coaches is how he can push his players, but still has their respect and admiration. As for McDuffie, he has developed into a leadership role for the Chiefs' defense while establishing himself as one of the best CBs in the league. He'll look to keep his momentum rolling into the 2025 season as he attempts to secure a long-term contract.
