Happy 64th birthday to two-time Pro Bowler, one-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl XXVI MVP, Mark Rypien!
Rypien was selected by Washington in the sixth round of the 1986 NFL Draft out of Washington State, but didn’t see his first action until 1988 when he took over for an injured Doug Williams.
He went 3-3 in six starts in 1988 and took the reins as the full-time starter for Washington in 1989. He made his first Pro Bowl that season, throwing for 3,768 yards and 22 touchdowns in 14 starts. After being available for just 10 games in 1990, Rypien led Washington to a 14-2 season 1991 and helped legendary head coach Joe Gibbs get his third and final Super Bowl title. Rypien threw for 292 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in that game to take home Most Valuable Player honors.
He’d play a full season just one more time in his career, retiring after the 1997 season following stints in Cleveland, St. Louis and Philadelphia. He briefly came out of retirement in 2001, seeing action in four games and attempting nine passes for the Indianapolis Colts.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Rypien is one of 19 quarterbacks in NFL history to win 14 games in one season. How many of those quarterbacks can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
