While the Los Angeles Chargers have made the playoffs the past two seasons, they’ve been bounced in the Wild Card Round each time. The franchise is trying to ensure things are different in 2026.

For the most part, the NFL at large has been impressed with Los Angeles’ efforts throughout the offseason. However, Seth Walder of ESPN is wondering why they didn’t spend more money.

“Overall, this was a good offseason,” Walder wrote. “But I wonder if the Chargers should have spent a little more. As of this writing, they have the fourth-most cap space in 2026 and rank in the top 10 in 2027 cap space. Could they have used that money to get a better guard than Cole Strange? I’d have shelled out for Elgton Jenkins or Isaac Seumalo if I were them.”

In terms of average value, the most expensive contract Los Angeles doled out was a three-year, $30 million pact with center Tyler Biadasz. Tight end Charlie Kolar and guard Cole Strange rounded out their top three most expensive signings.

All three of those players fit a clear need on the Chargers. As do other additions such as tight end David Njoku, running back Keaton Mitchell and defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson. Still, the franchise decided not to break the back when it comes to free agent spending.

The Chargers do have flexibility to make further moves should they come necessary. But Walder is at least wondering if a big pay day would’ve put Los Angeles over the top. It’s up to the franchise to prove they’re ready to move past the Wild Card Round.
