The 2025 Thanksgiving games were fun to watch. The first two games came down to the wire, and the third one is setting up for a potential comeback story. Here are my main takeaways from Thursday!
The Green Bay Packers put up arguably their best performance on tape since week two. This is what Packer fans envisioned when this team acquired Micah Parsons in the offseason, a dominant defense with an offense that makes big plays off the right arm of Jordan Love.
Love, on Thursday Morning, was spectacular and usually has been in his career on Thanksgiving. He threw for 234 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He had a 124.2 passer rating. This version of Love can get Green Bay far in the postseason. The question is, can he be less streaky?
Love’s last few games were not very good. He just needs to find a way to be less boom or bust and steadier. That is all the Packers need because that defense is legit.
The defense had three sacks, and 2.5 of them came from Parsons. It wasn’t a masterclass as the Lions had more success in this meeting than in the first one. Nevertheless, the Green Bay defense made plays when it mattered most.
Most importantly, any time Detroit ran a trick play, it was immediately shut down. Offensively, the Packers and Matt LaFleur were aggressive all day long. They converted three of three fourth downs, and the final one iced the game.
Green Bay beat the Lions at their own game, which is what was most impressive. If the offense can be close to what it was on Thanksgiving moving forward, the rest of the NFC better look out.
Before I dive into the Kansas City Chiefs, I want to give the Dallas Cowboys credit. They are now winners of three straight, sitting at 6-5-1. It is still going to be an uphill climb for them to make the playoffs, but they are dangerous.
In a span of five days, Dallas has beaten the two Super Bowl participants from last year. Next week, they have the Lions. If they win that game, they could potentially run the table. I’m not predicting it, but if they get in, no one wants to see that offense.
Now to the defending three-time AFC Champs. Kansas City has been poor in key situations. Defensively, they were unable to get Dallas off the field as the Cowboys were 9/16 on third down.
The Chiefs also had 10 penalties for 119 yards. A good portion of their penalties came on third down and towards the end of the game when they desperately needed a stop. In order to make the playoffs, they must run the table.
I will never count them out until Kansas City is mathematically gone. There is no reason, however, to believe they will go 5-0 the rest of the way. They are a 6-6 football team with major flaws, and I don’t think they can just flip a switch.
The Chiefs face the Houston Texans, and that will be no easy task. They could easily lose that game, as the Texans’ defense is arguably the best in the league. In a game where Patrick Mahomes threw for four touchdowns and no interceptions, they lost.
It is time to sound the alarms in Kansas City. Chiefs fans don’t have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
The AFC North is a weird division. Right now, the Pittsburgh Steelers lead the division at 6-5. The Baltimore Ravens are in second place at 6-6, and the Cincinnati Bengals are 4-8 at third place.
The only shot the Bengals have at making the playoffs is by winning their division. With how Baltimore and Pittsburgh look, that is not an impossible feat. Cincy just beat the Ravens in Baltimore 32-14 in Joe Burrow’s first game back from turf toe injury.
After a bit of a rough start, Burrow threw for two touchdowns in the second half. He finished the game with 261 yards and two scores with no turnovers. He brings a level of belief to this team and city as no one else can.
The Bengals’ defense, which had been atrocious all year long, had its best game of the season. They held the Ravens to 14 points and forced five turnovers. Cincinnati has one more crack at Baltimore before the season ends, so they can shorten the gap even more.
The Bengals would have to do what they did last year and win out in this last month. Can they do it? I’m not sure, but I’m not saying they can’t either.
The Ravens, on the other hand, have major issues. Lamar Jackson just had his third straight game with no passing touchdowns. Before the three-game drought, he had at least one in 34 straight games.
There is something not right with that offense, and if it isn’t figured out, the season could end in heartbreak. They cannot squander the opportunity to play in a postseason without the Chiefs.
This Thanksgiving slate was a microcosm of the 2025 season. Nothing makes sense.
Are the Chiefs really about to miss the playoffs? Are the 4-8 Bengals going to take the AFC North? The Detroit Lions are 7-5 and are in grave danger of missing the playoffs as well.
The black friday game just made things even weirder. The Chicago Bears beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-15 in Philly. What is wrong with the Eagles? They are just 1.5 games ahead of Dallas. There’s no way, right?
This is a season that just keeps on giving, and none of it still makes any sense. Happy Thanksgiving!
