The Arizona Cardinals Are Paying the Price for Completely Ignoring Their Offense During the Offseason

The Arizona Cardinals came into the 2025 NFL season with real hope to make a playoff run for the first time in a few years.

That hope came courtesy of the team's considerable investment in the defensive side of the football.

They opened the offseason by signing Josh Sweat to a big deal to revamp their pass rush. The Cardinals followed that up by completely revamping the interior of their defensive line by signing Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell and spending their first-round pick on Walter Nolen.

Nolen was the first of six picks the Cardinals made on the defensive side of the football in this year's NFL Draft.

Their focus on that side of the ball has paid off. Through the first three games of the season, the Cardinals' defense is allowing just 17 points per game. They also scored a touchdown in Week 2.

The success on that side of the ball played a large part in the Cardinals winning their first two games. It was also almost enough to mov the team to 3-0 as they held the San Francisco 49ers to 16 points.

Unfortunately, they couldn't overcome the shortcomings of the offense, which can at least partially be traced back to the organization's complete disinterest in that side of the ball during the offseason.

While the team spent six draft picks on defense this year, they used just one on offense and it came in the sixth round.

Their investment in free agency wasn't any more impressive. Their most notable addition through free agency was Jacoby Brissett, who is the team's backup quarterback.

The team's inaction came despite many calls for them to add a WR2 that could open up some more space for Trey McBride and Marvin Harrison Jr. to operate.

The team ignoring the offense during the offseason isn't the only problem. The play calling isn't particularly impressive. Kyler Murray hasn't elevated the offense this season. The receivers the team does have dropped passes in important moments against the 49ers.

However, the team had a clear need during the offseason and plenty of opportunities to the care of it.

They could have picked up Gabe Davis cheaply. Dyami Brown was available as well. Instead of unnecessarily spending their third-round pick on another pass rusher, they could have drafted Jaylin Noel or Donte Thornton to stretch the field.

They could have also made a big splash with a deal move for George Pickens or DK Metcalf.

Instead they chose to leave an offense that looked average in 2024 alone and it hasn't been any better in 2025.

In the first three games, the offense has contributed 20, 20, and 15 points.

That will be enough for the Cardinals' defense to get them pst opponents like the Saints and Panthers, but it's not anywhere near good enough for this team to reach their expectations for the year.

They have now already lost to one division rival without their starting QB. They still have to deal with a Rams team that looked like the real deal in Week 3 and a Seahawks team that has also been pretty strong after a tough Week 1.

At this point, they're going to have to find a mid-season trade to fix this offense or the defense is going to need to carry a heavy load if the Cardinals are going to put together a winning 2025 season.
