The Athletic names the offseason move from the Buffalo Bills that they liked the most
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

On Thursday, The Athletic's Mike Sando detailed the offseason move he liked the most from each NFL franchise.

When it comes to the Buffalo Bills, Sando pointed out the decision to trade wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans as the move he liked the most.

From The Athletic : Trading Stefon Diggs instead of prolonging a broken marriage allowed the Bills to set a new course on offense. Yes, they are worse on paper at receiver, but they might not be worse on the field, based on what Diggs gave them late last season. Removing Diggs could promote a welcome cultural reset in Buffalo.

Diggs is a four-time Pro Bowler who has caught over 100 passes and gone over 1,100 receiving yards in each of the last four seasons. He's not the type of player that you send to another team in the AFC on a whim.

The fact that Buffalo traded Diggs while the team is still trying to compete for a Super Bowl suggests that general manager Brandon Beane feels like the Bills are better off without the former Maryland wide receiver on the roster.

"These moves are never easy -- very hard, not made overnight, anything like that -- but any time you make a move like this, as I said, very difficult, you're doing it because you're trying to win," said Beane the week the trade was made. "Sometimes people may not see that. This is by no means the Bills giving up or trying to take a step back or anything like that. Everything we do, we're trying to win, and we're going to continue to do that."

The Bills have plenty of questions marks at wide receiver entering the 2024 season. But one potential positive to losing Diggs is that it could create an atmosphere in Buffalo where no one cares who catches the ball -- just as long as the team wins. That should make life a bit easier on quarterback Josh Allen. He may no longer have Diggs to throw to, but he also doesn't have to worry about making sure Diggs gets enough targets to keep the sometimes controversial wide receiver from posting a litany of "cryptic messages" on social media.
