The Chicago Bears are smack in the middle of organized team activities and quarterback Caleb Williams has been all over the headlines, whether it's warranted or not, and it has nothing to do with what he's doing on the field.
All these headlines are about Seth Wickersham's new book, which features excerpts from Williams and his father, that are over a year old, before he was even drafted by the Bears last April.
Williams and his father, rightfully, had concerns about playing in Chicago under the previous staff. Concerns that came true when said staff members were fired by the end of November, leaving Williams to continue fending for himself as a rookie.
This was a story in November, and it was covered then. It's not a story anymore, and certainly not something Williams needs to answer for, to anyone.
The page has been turned. Williams is eager to turn things around as well and be the one to do it in Chicago. And the team is willing to support him now, adding in a new coaching staff led by Ben Johnson and more pieces that were needed on the roster.
One of the more underrated additions was veteran quarterback Case Keenum. Over the last few seasons, Keenum has embraced the mentorship role working alongside young quarterbacks such as Jared Goff, Josh Allen, and C.J. Stroud.
All three players expressed how critical it was to have an experienced backup show them the ropes, and it's something Keenum clearly takes pride in.
Last year, the Bears opted against adding a veteran to the room behind Williams. Instead his backups were 2023 undrafted free agent Tyson Bagent and 2024 undrafted free agent Austin Reed. There was no experienced voice in that locker room in Williams' corner outside of a coaching staff that proved to be inept.
In Keenum, Williams now has that guy to turn to and work with that's not technically a coach (even though he's essentially one at this point in his career) and it's not only helping Williams, but also helping the team juke some league rules.
"The Bears adding Case Keenum to the quarterback room was, indeed, intentional, and Williams has taken advantage of it, in using Keenum almost as another coach after hours (to work around the CBA-mandated limits on what the coaches can actually do with the players at this point in the calendar)." - Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer

This is great news and exactly what Williams needs, and was missing out on in 2024. Being able to work with Keenum on the field, in the classroom, and while watching film is going to do wonders for his preparation this upcoming season.
I'm glad the team finally recognized the importance of having this for a young QB and I hope it continues to pay off in a major way for him.
