The best and most logical choice for the Lions' next backup quarterback

We've been talking a lot about what the Detroit Lions' future at backup quarterback looks like, and it usually consists of two choices. The Lions either bring back Kyle Allen or they draft a quarterback. Allen is not a bad choice, but they could do better, and the draft went from a deep quarterback draft to a not so deep at all draft.

There is one choice that makes a ton of sense, and the Lions would be wise to make it happen.

Jacoby Brissett makes a lot of sense for the Detroit Lions

Brissett has experience with new Lions offensive coordinator, Drew Petzing. He was with him in Arizona when Petzing was the Cardinals' OC, and he was with him in Cleveland when Petzing was the Browns' quarterbacks coach. Two places where he just so happened to play some of the best football of his career.

There's been some thought out there that, after a good 2025 season, in which he started the majority of the Cardinals' games, that he would be in demand for starting jobs in the league. Had it happened maybe five years ago, that might be true. But Brissett will be 33 when the season starts. He's past the part of his career where he's a viable long-term starter, but is 100% a premium backup.

In Detroit, Brissett can give the Lions a reliable quarterback to fall back on if Jared Goff were to miss any time for any reason. Brissett is the kind of guy who could get the Lions on schedule and make sure they keep winning. Especially with the weapons he'd have in Detroit. Something he's never really played with anywhere else.

Now, it's important to note that Brissett is not a free agent right now. But he is a prime cut candidate for the Cardinals since his cap hit goes from just over $5 million in 2025 to just over $9 million in 2026. Plus, they have very little dead Cap to pay. So it makes a lot of sense that they would cut him right before free agency to free up that cash.

If that happens, the Lions' signing him to a two-year deal worth $12 million, with $6 million of that being guaranteed, is a pretty good deal for both parties. That $6 million can get paid up front in 2026 to give the Lions some flexibility in 2027 if they want to get younger in the draft.

This one just makes a ton of sense for a team that wants to go win a Super Bowl. You must have premium depth in certain areas, and quarterback is one of them.
