The Detroit Lions are 5-2, and by all means, things are going pretty well for this team as they go into the bye. They have some injuries, but they're slated to get a lot of guys back after the bye and in November. Things are going well on that front.
Still, there are some problems that need to be fixed, and Lions head coach Dan Campbell knows that. Campbell said that he plans to give coaches the week off, but that he has some things that he's given each coach to work on once they're back. This has to be one of them.
Look, it's not the first time I've talked about this in 2025. The Lions have been pretty good at forcing turnovers this year. They've forced 17 turnovers in seven games this year. That is near the top of the league. But they're not doing anything with the ball after those turnovers. Take a look:
Just four touchdowns off turnovers. That's a problem for sure. Nobody is asking for perfection. That's impossible, and everyone knows it, but 23% is not great. Even a step up to 35% would be better at this point. I think it's even concerning that there are only five field goal attempts and that they've only hit three of them. It's bad.
There is a small positive though. The more the Lions have the ball, the less their opponent does. That's good from a clock control point of view. But they could really help themselves more if they scored more. That Chiefs game looks like just a few misakes away from being a win. The Lions' scoring after getting the ball back from a turnover on downs would have put them ahead by double digits in that game and would have changed everything. That didn't happen, though, and they lost.
This is the kind of thing that can be the difference in getting to and winning the Super Bowl and getting bounced in the playoffs. Let's see if they can fix it down the stretch.
