The Bears have battled through injuries all season, but one absence that has quietly impacted the offense is left tackle Ozzy Trapilo. While much of the attention has gone toward Caleb Williams‘ hamstring injury and Kyle Monangai‘s recent injuries, the offensive line has also taken a hit without its starting left tackle.
Chicago’s running game simply has not looked the same at times over the last few weeks. Monangai carried the offense against the Jets with his incredible performance, but outside of that stretch, consistency has been difficult to find. Some of that falls on injuries at running back. Some of it falls on quarterback instability. But some of it falls on the absence of a tackle who looked incredibly comfortable in Ben Johnson’s offense before getting hurt.
Trapilo provided stability in both pass protection and the run game. His ability to seal the edge and create rushing lanes made life easier for every skill position player on the field. When he went down, the ripple effects were felt throughout the offense.
Trapilo’s injury was not a minor setback. Suffering a torn patella is one of the toughest injuries an offensive lineman can endure, especially for a player whose game relies on leverage, mobility, and power. The fact that he is now trending toward a return is a testament to both his work ethic and Chicago’s medical staff.
The Bears have been careful throughout the recovery process. They did not want to rush one of their young cornerstone linemen back before he was ready. Now, as Chicago prepares for Atlanta, it appears Trapilo is finally nearing the finish line.
That is significant because this offense is at its best when it can establish balance. Ben Johnson wants to run the football. He wants to stay ahead of schedule. He wants to create play action opportunities. Having your starting left tackle back makes all of that easier.
The encouraging news does not stop with Trapilo. Williams is officially listed as questionable after returning to practice in full capacity for the first time since his injury. While we don’t know who could still start against Atlanta depending on how the week unfolds, the Bears clearly believe their franchise quarterback is nearing a return.
The possibility of getting both Williams and Trapilo back around the same time could completely change the outlook of Chicago’s offense heading into the second half of the season.
Even if Bagent starts this week, having Trapilo back would be a major boost. The Bears have proven they can function with backup quarterbacks. What they have not fully overcome is the inconsistency along the offensive line. A healthy Trapilo immediately raises the ceiling of both the rushing attack and the protection unit.
For a team with playoff aspirations, getting healthy in the trenches is just as important as getting healthy under center.
The Bears have managed to stay competitive despite injuries to key pieces on offense. But there is a reason Ben Johnson has repeatedly emphasized the importance of winning up front. Everything starts there.
Trapilo looked like a natural fit in Johnson’s system before the injury. He was reliable, athletic, and physical. His return should immediately help whichever running back is carrying the football, whether that’s a healthy Kyle Monangai, D’Andre Swift, or Roschon Johnson.
The biggest headline may be Caleb Williams trending upward, but Bears fans should not overlook Trapilo’s potential return. The offense has missed him more than many realize.
If Williams is close and Trapilo returns to the starting lineup, Chicago could be getting two of its most important offensive pieces back at exactly the right time. And after what happened against Green Bay, that is news Bears fans will gladly take.
