The Chiefs' worst coach ever should make fans feel lucky for Andy Reid

It hasn't always been smooth sailing for the Kansas City Chiefs at the head coach spot. While fans have been beyond fortunate to have Andy Reid running the show for over a decade, there have been plenty of bad head coaches for the franchise during its storied history.

When it comes to the absolute worse head coach in Chiefs history, there are plenty of names to choose from. There's Frank Gansz, who won just eight games in two years and Tom Bettis who, in his defense, only coached seven games, but had just one win under his belt.

As bad as these two guys were, however, the head coach who takes the cake for worst head coach in Chiefs history is Romeo Crennel, who was the head coach of the Chiefs in 2012.

Romeo Crennel is by far the worst head coach in Chiefs history

It didn't start out poorly for Crennel in the NFL. The long-time defensive coordinator had spent his early NFL years as the Patriots defensive coordinator during their early Super Bowl runs. He took a job as the Browns head coach in 2005, a gig that he held for four years and going 24-40 in the role.

After getting fired from his job in Cleveland, Crennel eventually found his way to Kansas City in 2010. The following year, Crennel was named the interim head coach after Todd Haley was let go and helped lead the Chiefs to a major upset win over the then-undefeated Packers. That win and the potential the Chiefs showed in Crennel's three games at the helm led to him getting the interim label removed and becoming the next head coach of the team.

As fans know, that did not go well. Crennel's 2012 Chiefs went a franchise-worst (well, tied for franchise-worst) 2-14. While it's not uncommon for a head coach to get fired after just one year, typically guys get an opportunity to try to fix things. That's how bad Crennel's one-year stint was in Kansas City.

Considering the 2012 Chiefs had six Pro Bowlers on the roster and still only managed to win two games showed how in over his head Crennel truly was. The quarterback situation was bad but even then, he wasn't giving Jamaal Charles the carries he deserved (and when pressed on why he didn't give Charles the ball more, his vague answer left people even more frustrated).

It was just a mess of a season and the Chiefs had no other choice but to dump Crennel after just one year. The good news is that, by doing so, it left a vacancy at the head coaching spot and the team was able to hire Andy Reid, who had been fired by the Eagles that same offseason. Had the franchise given Crennel another year, Reid likely isn't in Kansas City right now and the success we've had in the last decade probably doesn't happen.

So while, yes, the 2012 season led by Romeo Crennel was painfully bad at the time, it led to the Chiefs hiring Andy Reid, which changed the course of the franchise forever.
