While Kansas City Chiefs fans are spoiled with Patrick Mahomes as their quarterback now, the real fans remember the days when the quarterback situation in Kansas City could be described as laughable, at best. The Chiefs cycled through plenty of quarterbacks until Andy Reid got to town and didn't draft a first-round quarterback for over three decades after Todd Blackledge crashed and burned.
When trying to pinpoint the absolute worst starting quarterback in Chiefs history, however, the decision is easy. That would be Brodie Croyle, who failed to win a single game in 10 starts. Sure it's hard to win games in the NFL but even some of the worst signal-callers in the league have been able to win at least one game (even Tyler Palko has a win under his belt when he started for the Chiefs).
The Chiefs spent a third-round pick on Croyle in the 2006 draft and by the 2007 season, he was who Herm Edwards wanted to be the starter, as Green was traded to the Dolphins over the offseason to make way for the Alabama product.
Even with Croyle pretty much having the job handed to him on a silver plate, Damon Huard still won the starting gig and held onto the role until he was injured. Once Croyle was thrown into action, he went 0-6 in his six starts and while he threw six touchdowns, he also threw six interceptions. The future did not look bright, that's for sure.
Croyle ended up spending five years in the Chiefs organization, which was five years too many. It was clear early on in his career that he wasn't a good quarterback and that, paired with the fact that he couldn't stay healthy, led to a disastrous combination.
Croyle's final career stats saw him start 10 games and appear in 18 while throwing for 1,669 yards, eight touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Pretty lousy numbers for a third-round pick but it's not as though the Chiefs had the best coaches surrounding Croyle at the time either. They were a poorly-run organization, to say the least.
Croyle signed with the Arizona Cardinals in the summer of 2011 but didn't make their final roster. He was out of the league after that and the Chiefs continued to search for their franchise quarterback for the next several years before finally landing Mahomes in the first round of the 2017 draft.
Fans who followed the Chiefs in the 2000s remember the dark days of Croyle attempting to lead the offense and those fans deserve the success that Mahomes has brought so much more.
