The Indianapolis Colts' 2025 NFL Draft class is busy at work this weekend during the team's rookie minicamp.

One of the team's draft picks has a ton of upside, though he will have to sit behind a star player to begin his career, no matter what he does. But it's reasonable to wonder whether or not the Colts made this pick with the goal of him potentially taking over as the franchise's starter down the road.

Could DJ Giddens be Jonathan Taylor's future replacement in the Colts' backfield?

Kansas State RB DJ Giddens was one of the most interesting selections made by the Colts this year. Giddens was viewed as one of the top running backs in this stacked class. Many in the NFL Draft world looked at Giddens as one of the top five to six RBs in this year's class.

It was pretty much known all draft cycle that the Colts were going to add an RB in this draft. They used a fifth rounder to do so, which is probably where many expected them to draft an RB anyway. I wasn't expecting them to land such a talented player at the position like Giddens. There were many highly respected analysts in the NFL Draft space. He will begin his career backing up Jonathan Taylor, but I'm not so sure that's their long-term plan for him.

Giddens is coming off back-to-back college seasons at Kansas State with over 1,200 rushing yards and has the upside of becoming a better pass catcher. From his overall burst and ability to make plays with the ball in his hands. He is still only 21 years old and is going to get to sit behind and learn from one of the best RBs in the league, Jonathan Taylor. Taylor's current contract with the Colts expires after the 2026 season. And at the moment, it sure feels like the Colts are grooming Giddens to potentially take over the team's starting job, as opposed to giving Taylor yet another large contract on the RB market.
