The Colts had a couple major problems on their roster revealed that they need to do something about as soon as possible

The Indianapolis Colts were without their top outside CB and edge rusher in Week 2, with Charvarius Ward and Laiatu Latu both inactive with injuries.

As a result, the defense struggled throughout the game against the Broncos, which almost resulted in a loss. Thankfully, the Colts snuck away with a 29-28 win after a last-second field goal propelled them across the finish line. That shouldn't be a reason for the team to ignore these issues; however, moves still need to happen.

The Colts have a real depth issue at CB and edge

Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. (19) makes a catch for a touchdown as Indianapolis Colts cornerback Xavien Howard (4) gives chase Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025, during a game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Colts' lack of depth at CB and edge was on full display in Week 2. With their top CB (Ward) and top edge rusher (Latu) out with injuries, the play behind them was not good enough. The Colts took a risk this offseason by signing veteran Xavien Howard, who missed the entire 2024 season. In Week 2, he was catapulted into the top CB spot, and with it came a big spotlight.

Howard might as well have had a bullseye instead of a jersey number with how often Bo Nix and the Broncos targeted him on the day. And the Colts had no choice but to ride it out with him due to not having any real options behind him. Currently, Mekhi Blackmon, who was traded to the team ahead of cut-down day, and UDFA Johnathan Edwards are the only options that can man outside CB snaps. But today we learned that Howard is an issue, and the Colts need to find an alternative.

Whether that is via free agency or a trade, an addition seems necessary. And while they are at it, the team's edge room without Latu generated almost no pressure throughout this game. That can't happen, especially with a former first-round pick (Kwity Paye), a 2025 second-round pick (JT Tuimoloau), and a player being paid $10 million (Samson Ebukam) all on the roster.

The Colts reportedly made calls to trade for Trey Hendrickson and Micah Parsons this offseason, so it shouldn't be ruled out that they would consider making a big move to improve the unit.
