The Commanders made a shocking roster change that no one expected, but it may have been the best move possible

The Washington Commanders didn't like what they saw at a certain position group, and they wasted no time making changes.

The coaching staff already made changes at right guard with Andrew Wylie taking over , but they made a shocking change on Sunday. Just before the game against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Commanders listed their inactives for the game, and there was one name no one expected.

Brandon Coleman was inactive in Week 3

The Commanders wanted to shake up the offensive line after back-to-back disappointing performances, and they did so in a major way by demoting second-year player Brandon Coleman and even making him a healthy scratch for Week 3.

It has been a rough start this season with his move inside to left guard after being the starting left tackle last year, but people expected him to look better inside, and it just hasn't happened. Through the first two games, Coleman has allowed six pressures and has a 31.7 pass-blocking grade on PFF. The move to bench him would be one thing, but to make him a healthy scratch completely is very telling for the 2024 third-round pick.

We thought that meant Nick Allegretti would get the start at LG, but that wasn't the case as Chris Paul got the start instead. Head Coach Dan Quinn talked about the decision after the game.

"We really made a competition, the biggest part of it," Quinn said. "We changed both spots at guard with Nick [Allegretti] and Brandon [Coleman]. They're a big part of what we do, but that is the central theme of where we're at. We're still in the early days here to get going, and competition's part of who we are in all ways, in all shapes and sizes. So, inside at guard, ‘Hey, we're going to go a different way", doesn't mean where we're at for not making any statement or message. Trust me on that. This is what we're doing right today, and we'll keep digging, man. That's what competing is about, and you just keep battling to find it, and we'll continue to do that.”

Paul made the most of his opportunity on Sunday, though, and finished with zero pressures, hurries, and hits in his 26 pass blocking snaps. This is the type of performance that keeps you as the starter, but Quinn will have a true competition every week, and play the best five up front, and you have to respect it. Hopefully, today marked the start of better play from the whole unit, and they can help keep the running game going and protect whoever starts at quarterback next week.
