'The complimentary football in the second half was what we were looking for' – Dan Quinn credits team in Commanders' first road win

It took a full team effort as expected, and the Washington Commanders got its first road win of the season against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Throughout the season, one side of the ball would perform well, while the other would be a letdown, leading to difficult losses on the road. Getting quarterback Jayden Daniels back reignites the team just by being around and making big plays, and the defense fed off of it and had its best performance this season.

This was the first time since the Week 1 win against the New York Giants that the offense, defense, and special teams all contributed, leading to the most impressive win of the season.

Dan Quinn wasn't thrilled with the start, but things changed

It looked like a typical Commanders' road game that we've seen this season, as the defense struggled and allowed 10 points to start the game for the third straight time. The Chargers were driving down the field to go up 17-0, until the defense caused a fumble that changed all of the momentum. It's not about how you start, it's about how you respond, and head coach Dan Quinn acknowledges that.

"We were down 10 to nothing, then ahead 20 to 10," Quinn said. "We thought that would be a big deal for us coming into it. My favorite part of the game was the last drive, you know, to go six minutes and 30 seconds at the end, that's a big deal for us to have four minutes to be able to run the ball and go finish. . .I thought the complimentary football in the second half was what we were looking for. It wasn't there at the very beginning. I thought we had some self-inflicted wounds. So those were the things that I was pleased about in the game."

Defense made the turnovers needed

Cornerback Mike Sainristil finally got the first turnover on defense last week, but it didn't seem to matter after how bad the rest of the defense looked. This week was different, though. The fumble on Johnston led to a touchdown, and the Sainristil interception at the goal line led to another. The defense never folded and made the big plays to help keep Herbert and company out of the end zone.

Justin Herbert kept fighting back and tried to make big plays, but the Commanders brought the pressure to help the secondary out, and got four sacks on Sunday. Herbert's 166 passing yards are the eighth-fewest in his 84 career starts.

Jayden Daniels sparked the offense

To no one's surprise, getting Daniels back really helped the Commanders' offense get going against a stout Chargers team. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury finally committed to the run game again, and it paid off with Bill Croskey-Merritt's best game of the season with 150 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns.

The running game opened up the passing game for Daniels, which was highlighted by a bomb to Luke McCaffrey right before halftime, and the touchdown throw to Deebo Samuel to put the nail in the coffin.

We knew this would be a tough matchup for the Commanders on the road once again, but Daniels' return and the defense making a statement after facing adversity helped make this a complete team win to build off of. This is a week-to-week league, and now you move on to the next with the momentum you built in a big-time win.
