The Dolphins have a clear double-dip roster upgrade waiting after their bye week, if they’re bold enough to make the move

The Miami Dolphins have started greasing the wheels for a return of one of their longest tenured starters on the 2025 roster. Offensive tackle Austin Jackson, who was drafted by the team in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, saw his 21-day activation window opened by the team ahead of Miami's 16-13 overtime victory over the Washington Commanders in Week 11.

Jackson, who is still technically on injured reserve but practiced with the team ahead of the Commanders game, now has the bye coming up and then a full week of practice before his next chance to play. That added time should set the stage for a return to action for Miami's right tackle. But it also gives Miami a chance to take an inspired swing of the bat at improving two positions at once — if they're courageous enough to make the change.

Dolphins should move Larry Borom to right guard upon Austin Jackson's return to lineup

The current right tackle, Larry Borom, came to Miami this offseason as a utility offensive lineman who had collected NFL snaps at left tackle, left guard, right guard, and right tackle during four seasons in Chicago. He's played respectably well in place of Austin Jackson over the last 10 games and is coming off his best game of the season against Washington.

He's playing well enough to have earned a chance to stay in the lineup, at least until veteran right guard James Daniels is ready for a return of his own after joining Austin Jackson on injured reserve after Week 1. Daniels suffered a pec injury that has cost him all but three snaps this season after signing a three-year, $24 million contract with Miami in March. Daniels' caliber of play and the economics of his contract should trump Borom staying in the lineup.

Miami Dolphins 2025 offensive line snap leaders

  • Guard Jonah Savaiinaea - 637 snaps
  • Center Aaron Brewer - 630 snaps
  • Left tackle Patrick Paul - 630 Snaps
  • Right tackle Larry Borom - 600 snaps
  • Right guard Cole Strange - 465 snaps

Borom has NFL playing experience at guard and now has settled into the offensive system. As a result, the Dolphins should be taking advantage of the extra preparation of the bye week and lay the foundation for a chance for Borom to play at guard. Cole Strange and the right guard position have not drawn the same ire as rookie Jonah Savaiinaea has at left guard this season, but the film illustrates that Strange is often the player getting the extra support with slide protections.

Consequently, his pressure numbers aren't as glaring as what Savaiinaea's have been while being left on more islands than Miami probably anticipated when it committed to starting a rookie. But make no mistake about it, the Dolphins' low red zone issues against Washington were often centered around the execution at right guard. Whether it was Strange falling off the block of Javon Kinlaw on a third-and-goal carry by De'Von Achane at the one-yard-line that got stuffed or him getting collapsed and washed backwards on the fourth-down attempt by Ollie Gordon, those reps were disruptive and it's been a theme all season.

Whether or not Miami is inspired to facilitate this change with Jackson's return is a different conversation all together. It's hard to say what they're willing to do as far as jumbling offensive personnel. But if they're not thinking about this move, they should be.
