The Dolphins Look to Continue Dominance Over the Jets

The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets rivalry is the stuff of legends, producing classic moments such as Dan Marino’s fake spike and the Monday Night Miracle comeback by the Jets in the Meadowlands.

However, things have become rather lopsided in the Mike McDaniel era. Since McDaniel took over in 2022, the Dolphins have won 5 of their seven matchups, including four straight from January 2023 to December 2024.

Even the losses that the Dolphins have incurred have excuses built in. Their 40-17 loss in McDaniel’s first year was the game following Tua’s concussion against the Bengals. Teddy Bridgewater started but was quickly removed from the game by spotters for a possible concussion.

This forced the rookie Skylar Thompson into action. The most recent loss came in the regular season finale last year. That game is infamous for Tyreek Hill removing himself once it became clear that the Broncos were going to defeat the Chiefs to secure the last wildcard spot over Miami.

Though the wins have primarily gone to Miami of late, that doesn’t mean that the contests haven’t been entertaining. The regular-season finale against the Jets in the 2022-23 season saw Skylar Thompson lead the Dolphins to a victory and a playoff berth, finishing 11-6. Last season, Tua outdueled Aaron Rodgers in an overtime thriller that saw him connecting with Jonnu Smith for the game-winning touchdown. Even this season, we’ve been treated to a fun contest between the two teams as the Dolphins narrowly edged out the Jets 27-21 for their first win of the season.

Since that game, the Jets have managed to become somewhat mediocre rather than just plain bad. They’re 3-5 over their last eight and have made the switch from Justin Fields to Tyrod Taylor. This has resulted in close losses to the Buccaneers and Panthers and a victory over the Falcons in their most recent game.

Taylor provides New York experience and proven consistency. He’s never going to be the best QB in the league, but he does add a stability that only comes from a 15-year veteran.

The Dolphins come into this contest as one of the hottest teams in football, led by their star running back De’Von Achane. He’s averaged a bit over 112 yards on the ground over his last five games, where the Dolphins have gone 4-1. With Tyreek Hill lost for the season, the Dolphins’ offense has reinvented itself into a run-first team with the inclusion of a new package that sees six offensive linemen on the field in order to open up holes for Achane.

It was a much-needed shift without playmakers like Hill and tight end Darren Waller available for the team to play the style of play that they have become known for in the McDaniel era. Factor in Tua having a down year, and the focus on running the ball with Achane may have saved their season.

I expect this contest to be close, much like their previous meeting, but I anticipate Miami coming out on top once again. If they win, they will move to 6-7, with winnable games ahead. We can start seriously looking into playoff scenarios should that be the case.
