The Dolphins Might Suffer From Their Success

The 2025 season has been anything but a success for the Miami Dolphins thus far. A sluggish start that resulted in a 1-6 record and the feeling that the season was over before it had even begun. Many people called for the heads of Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier, though they would only get Grier in a mutual parting of ways.

Still, the prevailing sentiment amongst the fans was that the team should do what it can in order to secure a top pick in the upcoming NFL draft. The tank was on, or so we thought.

Since that start, the Dolphins have now won 3 of their last four games. They began this hot streak with a commanding 34-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, before losing to the Ravens. Then they exorcised some demons with a 30-13 blowout win against the rival Buffalo Bills, before traveling to Madrid to eke out an overtime victory against the Washington Commanders to improve their record to 4-7.

While that’s not anything to write home about, and Miami finds itself as the 11th seed in the AFC playoff picture, it becomes important when you consider the remaining schedule for the team.

They come off their bye week to a game against the currently 2-8 New Orleans Saints, then they play the hapless Jets, next a matchup with the Steelers, who might be without Aaron Rodgers if that wrist injury he sustained on Sunday proves substantial.

Next up would be the Bengals, who have looked very beatable even when Joe Burrow was in the lineup, the Buccaneers, who have cooled after a hot start to the season, and finally a rematch with the New England Patriots, who may have their playoff spot locked up by the final week of the season.

All of this is to say that 10-7 is possible, 9-8 is within reach, and 8-9 is likely. That finish would almost certainly result in Head Coach Mike McDaniel saving his job. Perhaps the team would be allowed to move off of quarterback Tua Tagavailoa, a new General Manager would probably wish to build something of his own.

To finish near .500 and miss the playoffs would be an exceptionally Dolphins thing to do, reminiscent of their 2021 season that started 1-7 before the team ripped off 7 straight wins, they then lost to the Titans before beating the Patriots to finish the season 9-8.

That season ended with the firing of Head Coach Brian Flores and the eventual hiring of McDaniel. From what I’ve seen online on places like X and Reddit, many fans would prefer that the team just give up and tank in the hope of finding great replacements for Head Coach and General Manager, ultimately making the team a legitimate title contender.

The notion is especially popular after McDaniel seemed to do whatever he could to hand the game to the Commanders, who wouldn’t accept it. Though this would be a gamble, one we’ve made plenty of times before, not to a great payout. As Barry Jackson, who covers the team, put it on X yesterday

“I know some of you cannot and won’t accept this, and that’s fine, but I’ll say it anyway: There is no evidence this franchise can overhaul everything and build a championship team. None. (So why carry this delusion that if they lose enough games this year, they’ll make all the right hires and signings and draft picks and become a powerhouse?) So I encourage you to recalibrate your fandom. Be happy in little things, like winning games and being in the hunt. The sooner you accept this reality, the less angst you will feel.”

So that leaves us Dolphins fans to either hope that they lose or try to enjoy the ride for what it is, the destination likely being continued mediocrity. That isn’t to say that there is no joy in mediocrity; in years past, it was defeating the Patriots, this year it was besting the Bills.

So what do you think, are you ready to accept that the Dolphins are who we thought they were all along? Let me know in the comments.
