The Dolphins Quarterback Situation Isn’t That Complicated

We are a few weeks away from free agency and a couple of months away from the draft, and Miami Dolphins fans are all up in their feelings about the team’s current quarterback situation.

Fans are overthinking the matter and lashing out at other fans who have a different viewpoint.

Some fans are still trying to find a way to make it work with Tua, while others are totally against Miami even considering adding Malik Willis.

Any time a name like Jimmy Garoppolo or Mitchell Trubisky is tied to the Dolphins, some Dolphins fans throw a tantrum.

To quote Aaron Rodgers. R-E-L-A-X!

Relax, Dolphins fans.

If you step back and look at it logically, Miami’s quarterback situation is crystal clear.

The Tua Situation

The Miami Dolphins are moving on from Tua Tagovailoa.

I know some Dolphins fans think it doesn’t make sense to cut him because of the dead cap number.

Other Dolphins fans think he can be fixed and find that 2022 or 2023 Tua.

It ain’t happening.

Two head coaches and a general manager got fired because Tua underachieved.

This new head coach and general manager are not going to let that be their fate.

They will try to trade, and if they can’t, then they will cut Tua.

Tua is gone.

Stop wasting precious time considering other scenarios.

Will Miami Sign Malik Willis?

Stop stressing over what Willis will be paid and how many teams will want him.

Point Blank: If the Miami Dolphins want to sign Malik Willis, they will.

That’s it.

You may not agree, but that’s your problem, not the Dolphins’ problem.

In the NFL, there is a salary cap, but no salary cap has ever prevented a team from signing a player it wants.

You can throw in void years, you can have a small year 1 cap hit, where it then escalates in year 2.

Signing bonus vs base salary.

There is a reason Brandon Shore makes a lot of money and is in Miami: to get creative and make it work.

I am sure Willis will want to be in Miami with his relationship with Jeff Hafley, Jon Eric Sullivan, and other former Packers assistant coaches now in Miami.

So, if Miami wants him, they will get him.

If Miami doesn’t want him, then they won’t.

Or if Miami values Willis at a certain price and the bidding goes above that, they will probably bow out.

But anyone who says Miami won’t get Willis because they can’t afford him, stop listening to those people, because they don’t know what they are talking about.

If Miami wants Willis, no matter the cost, they will get him.

If they put a ceiling on how much they will pay him, that is their choice, but it’s not because they can’t afford him.

There is a difference.

The Jimmy Garoppolo Rumor

There was the Cameron Wolfe report from the NFL Network that Miami may have interest in Jimmy Garoppolo as a cheaper alternative to Malik Willis.

Well, duh!

Yeah!

Again, if Miami doesn’t want to break the bank for Willis, they still need to add a quarterback or two.

Sorry for you, Quinn Ewers and nobody else” truthers out there.

Garoppolo worked with Bobby Slowik in San Francisco; they got to a Super Bowl together and almost won it.

So, if Miami needs a quarterback, it makes natural sense to inquire about Garoppolo, who will be a free agent.

Garoppolo understands the offensive system Slowik will run, and would pick it up quickly, and there wouldn’t be a big learning curve here.

You bring him in, you let him compete with Ewers, and may the best man win.

Not a hard concept to understand.

Other Veteran Free Agents

And if Garoppolo doesn’t want to move cross-country or has a chance to stay in LA with the Rams, Miami will look to bring in another veteran quarterback.

Joe Flacco, Mitchell Trubisky, Tyrod Taylor, Carson Wentz, Kenny Pickett, or Russell Wilson may be the names kicked around the Dolphins headquarters in Miami Gardens.

The Dolphins quarterback room won’t be Quinn Ewers and Cam Miller, so get that notion out of your head.

I know none of those names listed above are anything to get excited about, but that’s who’s available.

And any of them who are signed won’t be handed the starting quarterback job; they will have to compete for it against the other quarterbacks on the team.

Again, may the best man win!

Quinn Ewers

Some Dolphins fans are 100% in on Quinn Ewers and think he is the long-term answer at quarterback.

Why? I have no earthly idea.

I like Quinn. I loved that we stole him in Round 7 of last year’s draft.

But he was pedestrian in the 3 starts he had last season, and I didn’t see anything that suggested he’s an NFL starter.

With that said, if he is as good as some of you say he is, then he should have no problem winning a training camp quarterback competition over anybody.

CONCLUSION

See, the Dolphins quarterback situation really isn’t that hard to understand.

They will draft their quarterback of the future in about 14 months in the 2027 NFL draft, which we know.

But when it comes to this 2026 season and what they do at quarterback, stop worrying about it, Dolphins fans.

Stop coming up with goofy off-the-wall scenarios that have no chance of happening.

If you look at things logically, you will see how this will play out.

Oh, and P.S…..they aren’t trading up for Fernando Mendoza, so don’t even go there!
