The Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Houston Texans on Sunday night football in Week 14. With their hopes of winning the AFC West on the line, this game was a must-win for Patrick Mahomes and company.
When it was all said and done, the Texans walked away with a 20-10 victory, leaving the Chiefs with a 6-7 record. After a tumultuous season for Kansas City, it’s officially time to panic.
One of the biggest advantages for the Chiefs over the years is Mahomes’ ability to extend plays. What’s been called “Mahomes magic” is now becoming a parlor trick to defenses.
The Texans’ defense is arguably the best in the NFL. They allow 174 passing yards and 91.7 rushing yards per game, both ranked fourth in the league. They have the number one-ranked total defense, allowing a league minimum of 265.7 yards per game.
The Chiefs’ offense has never been perfect, but it was unpredictable with Mahomes at the helm. The two-time NFL MVP played his worst career game on Sunday night. He completed 14-33 passes for 160 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions. He ended with a passer rating of 19.8.
Whether it was playcalling or performance, the pattern is clear: the Chiefs have now lost four of their last five games and cannot keep up with top teams. Their ability to contend is slipping.
This isn’t to say the Chiefs have no stars on the team, but their roster is currently lacking truly dangerous players. Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice are a strong duo, but neither one is a top-tier NFL receiver.
Kansas City is also lacking a top running back. Isiah Pacheco can pop off in bursts, but he’s not consistent. Kareem Hunt serves as a backup, but at 30 years old, he’s past his prime.
The New England Patriots built a dynasty by developing smaller names and having the most well-run team in the NFL. That’s hard to replicate. In a league full of superstars, the Chiefs need something to put them over the top. Mahomes can’t be Superman forever.
The Chiefs are now 6-7 and officially unable to win the AFC West, sitting at third place. The Broncos lead the division with an 11-2 record, while the Los Angeles Chargers are 8-4 in second place. To make matters worse, Kansas City is currently out of the playoff picture. They’re on the bubble with the Indianapolis Colts (8-5), the Baltimore Ravens (6-7), and the Miami Dolphins (6-7).
The Chiefs might now be looking at a “win-out” situation. Their final four games are against the Chargers, Tennessee Titans, Broncos, and Las Vegas Raiders. They can beat the Titans and Raiders, who are among the league’s worst teams. The challenge will come in the division against the Chargers and Broncos.
The #Texans hold the final Wild Card spot in the AFC and are within a game of the #Jaguars for the division lead.

For the #Chiefs, it’s win out and pray for help at this point. The franchise’s streak of 10 straight trips to the playoffs is in serious jeopardy. pic.twitter.com/b31MvzjkiT
A huge factor of the 2024 Chiefs is that they won games despite underperforming. Whether it was a blocked field goal, a toe out of bounds, or a questionable flag, luck was always on their side. They won 11 games last season by one score. They also never scored more than 30 points in a game.
2025 seems to be the opposite story. Kansas City has now lost six games by one score. All of their losses came against teams that are in the playoff picture. Their ability to beat contenders is becoming a concern.
Luck is a wonderful thing, but it runs out eventually. The Chiefs ran into a brick wall in the Super Bowl when the Philadelphia Eagles battered them. They haven’t looked the same since, and the Super Bowl hangover is real.
Kansas City has been on a dynastic run, but there doesn’t seem to be much desire to change. The team never makes splashy moves, and it doesn’t address holes with top-level talent. The fire they once had seems to be gone. If they don’t find it soon, the 2025 season may already be over.
