At the end of the day, the Detroit Lions just couldn't get a few plays to go their way, and it meant almost everything. Luckily for the Chiefs, pretty much everything went their way, and they wound up beating the Lions 30-17
The big things get talked about all the time, but it's the little mistakes that killed the Lions on Sunday Night. The touchdown on the first drive getting called back, St. Brown with the incredibly rare drop on fourth down from Amon-Ra St. Brown, and the DPI on Rock Ya-Sin that set up a touchdown. Maybe two of those things don't happen, and they possibly win this game. That's the story here. Nothing more, nothing less. No matter what narratives get shoved in your face this coming week.
Patrick Mahomes is a different animal, but the Lions' secondary had been playing well all year. But going into this game without D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold, and then having both Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph banged up. The Lions got picked apart.
The big thing Lions head coach Dan Campbell wanted his guys to achieve was to be able to cover for six seconds. Detroit's defense just wasn't able to do it, and the Chiefs took advantage of that. On top of that, they went after the new guy in Arthur Maulet. A guy who has three practices logged for the Lions. When it rained, it poured. The Lions need to get healthy as soon as possible.
At this point, we don't know how long both Arnold and Reed are going to be out, but we do know that this team needs help at corner because they got burnt all night long. Mahomes couldn't miss. It was like he was playing against air. The coverage was off all day, and there was just no adjustment that the Lions could make to stop it. So it's time to consider your options outside of the building. The worst-case scenario is that you wind up with really good depth at cornerback when you get your starters back.
Jared Goff played pretty well in this game. He managed to complete 79.3% of his passes. The ones he didn't complete were some bad drops, or there was one play where Gibbs just goes left, he has a wide open catch, and takes it directly to the endzone for a touchdown. Goff finished the day going 23-29 for 203 yards and two touchdowns.

I mean, come on. These are the guys who remind the teacher that they forgot to give out homework on a Friday. These are the guys whose goal is to get the party with the cool people broken up. Meanwhile, the Lions are just over here, where sunglasses at night and using their dad's bread truck to surf on top of it like thier Teen Wolf and the nerds told on them. This was a cool play that will now just be lost in the void.
When the Lions claimed Thomas Harper earlier in the season, it felt like kind of a steal since Harper had looked good with the Raiders. He was someone Pete Carroll and Las Vegas probably wished they were able to get back, but the Lions jumped on him. While he didn't get to play a whole lot in this one, he made a big PBU on fourth down and had everyone talking about him on the internet. Good for him. He seems like a guy who's likely to be around for a while, but needs to continue to grow. It's only his second season.
He's going to have to stay late while Amon-Ra St. Brown forces himself to catch 3,000 balls on the jugs machine after the game. Maybe he'll give him the key and have him lock up. St. Brown had a super rare drop. So rare that it was the first time in his entire career that he dropped a pass on fourth down. It just never happens.
That 4th-down drop by #Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown was extremely rare. It was his first of the season and first career drop on a fourth down, per ESPN Research.

St. Brown did not have a drop all of last season either.
After being super quiet in the last two weeks, the Lions got plenty out of Williams on Sunday night. He caught multiple big passes in the first half, including a big 22-yard touchdown. If you were worried about Williams being quiet, stop doing that. He finished the night with six catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Sam LaPorta just keeps getting better and better every week, and this circus catch is further proof of that. How does he do this and still get both feet down? Just, wow!
