The Miami Dolphins didn't have much go their way offensively in 2024. One of the bets that did hit big? That would be Pro Bowl alternate tight end Jonnu Smith. Smith signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Dolphins early last spring before proceeding to post career numbers across the board. He logged 88 receptions, 884 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns while being named an AFC Pro Bowl alternate at the tight end position.

But Smith, coming off such a big breakout season, is now reportedly looking to secure a new contract with the Dolphins. And ESPN's Adam Schefter has disclosed that Miami is now, as a result, seeing a potential trade partner for their lone Pro Bowler, instead. And they might have one in Pittsburgh.

For Smith, the Dolphins remain where he wants to be. But Miami is at an awkward intersection as a football team. Smith became a target sponge this past season while playing prominently underneath as the Dolphins' passing attack shrunk to overly conservative levels. And Smith, who turns 30-years old in August, will likely command a pretty high price point after the year he just put up for a team that is in the midst of a youth movement.

Cashing out high on Smith may not be the worst thing in the world, particularly when considering the presence of Jaylen Waddle and De'Von Achane as young staples in the offensive skill room and the presumed return of Tyreek Hill for another year due to some of the restrictions of moving his contract amid off-the-field troubles.

Why The Steelers Are Interested?

The reason this trade could happen with Pittsburgh is because of Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. He is probably the biggest Jonnu Smith fan in the league, given the fact that he coached him with the Tennessee Titans and then signed him when he was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

That as a slight to Jonnu Smith. He was a Pro Bowler in 2024, and is a dynamic option as a supercharged pass catcher from the in-line or flexed out position. But the Steelers' TE room is one of the deepest in the league. Obviously, it's headlined by Pat Freiermuth, with Darnell Washington, Connor Heyward, and Donald Parham behind him. This signals that the team wants to upgrade their pass-catching situation, given the little production that Washington has provided since being drafted in 2023.

Add in the ties with Arthur Smith, and here we are. This could give Pittsburgh a receiving option they desperately need if they can pull off the trade.
