Happy 58th birthday to 10-time Pro Bowler, six-time All-Pro, two-time AP Offensive Player of the Year and 1997 MVP, Barry Sanders!
The Detroit Lions selected Sanders with the third-overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State after his Heisman Trophy campaign in 1988. He made an immediate impact, rushing for 1,470 yards and 14 touchdowns en route to a First-Team All-Pro nod and Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
He led the NFL in rushing yards for the first of four times in 1990 before leading the league in rushing touchdowns in 1991 with 16. Sanders never rushed for fewer than 1,115 yards in a season – which came in a year he played in just 11 games.
Despite rushing for 1,491 yards in 1998, Sanders retired after just 10 professional seasons – all in Detroit. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2004, and he still holds every major career and single-season rushing record in the Motor City.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Sanders is one of just four players to rush for at least 1,000 yards in 10 different NFL seasons. How many of the players with at least five 1,000-rushing-yard seasons can you name in six minutes?
Good luck!
