Happy birthday to the late, great Raiders quarterback, Daryle Lamonica!
Lamonica was a 12th-round selection in the 1963 NFL Draft and a 24th-round selection in that year’s AFL draft. He decided to go play for the Buffalo Bills in the AFL rather than the Packers in the NFL after a college career at Notre Dame, but he started just four games under center for the Bills from 1963-66.
He joined the then-Oakland Raiders (coached by John Madden) and took over as the starter for the 1967 season, when he completed 51.8 percent of his passes for 3,228 yards and 30 touchdowns en route to a 13-1 regular season record. Two seasons later he’d throw a career-highs in yards (3,302) and touchdowns (34) and win another 12 games, but his production would decline over the next five seasons and he retired after 1974.
Lamonica lived until April 21, 2022, when he passed away in his sleep at 80 years old.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Lamonica’s efforts in 1967 and 1969 make him one of just 34 quarterbacks in history to record multiple 30-passing-TD seasons. How many of those quarterbacks can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
