The New England Patriots made a mistake trading former Tennessee QB Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys and it's already showing

When the New England Patriots traded former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this spring, the franchise essentially sent the message that iron doesn't sharpen iron and competition doesn't breed greatness.

According to MassLive's Karen Guregian, the Patriots traded Milton because the former Vol "fancied himself a starter" and was confident that "he was good enough to give Maye a run, if not overtake him for the top job."

And the Patriots apparently had no room for that kind of mindset from their backup quarterback in the building.

So instead of rocking with the uber talented Milton as the primary backup to Maye, the Patriots signed journeyman quarterback Josh Dobbs -- a player that New England doesn't have to worry about pushing Maye for the starting job.

Time will tell if that was the right decision. The early returns in OTAs, however, suggest that it wasn't the right move.

Maye looked a little too comfortable during OTAs on Tuesday, reportedly throwing four interceptions on his first nine attempts.

It's still early in OTAs, so it's not worth panicking over Maye's turnover palooza. But, again, every young player benefits from competition. Maye doesn't need to know that he's safe and locked in as a the starting quarterback in New England -- he's still only 22 years old. There aren't many 22 year olds that deserve a guaranteed starting job in the NFL.

Maye needs the competition that Milton would've provided. Those two players pushing each other would've made the Patriots' quarterback room stronger and tougher.

Instead, the Patriots have created a situation where complacency has replaced competition. And Maye's rough first day on the practice field looked like a direct result of that complacency.
