The New Regime Is Officially Underway in Miami

The Miami Dolphins have started the week off quickly. Before the clock hit 9:30 am on the East Coast, the Dolphins’ front office was already making moves that would have lasting ramifications on the future of the organization. It is clear that the Dolphins are looking to get the team’s salary cap back to a manageable level after the previous regime overspent.

The first and least surprising move of the day was the Dolphins informing their former franchise quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, that he would be released. In a statement released on their X account, new General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan made the announcement.

“I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year.” He wrote.

“As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and the player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions, both on the field and in the community, during his six seasons in Miami.

As we move forward, we will be focused on infusing competition across the roster and establishing a strong foundation for this team as we work towards building a sustained winner.”

The move is not surprising; the firing of former General Manager Chris Grier and Head Coach Mike McDaniel made it clear that the team was starting fresh. Despite Tua’s massive contract, it is clear the new regime felt it was better to have a clean break than to try to salvage anything from Tua’s situation.

A second move this morning came as a bit of a surprise, with Miami trading former first-round pick and recently reacquired safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Adam Schefter broke the news that Miami was sending Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick.

Additionally, the Jets were signing Fitzpatrick to a three-year, $40 million deal.

While the trade destination is less than ideal, being a division rival, the trade itself makes a lot of sense. Even before he got a new deal, Fitzpatrick was set to make a hefty salary. If he wanted to get one last large contract, then that wasn’t going to happen in Miami. Given that he was traded to the Jets, it feels unlikely that this was a move in pursuit of a Super Bowl ring.

Also, the fact that he was in the division shows that Jon-Eric Sullivan and Head Coach Jeff Hafley are not too high on his potential for the next few seasons.

While it was wild to wake up to the news that two players once thought to be a part of the team’s long-term future were being released and traded, it shows that the new regime is ready and willing to make the tough decisions. With these moves, they have officially begun to reshape the organization in their image. Will that be an image that includes playoff victories? We’ll have to wait and see.
