The new wrinkle that John Morton wants to add to the Lions offense is something a lot of people think Jared Goff can’t do

The Detroit Lions started training camp last week, and one thing that everyone has noticed is that while the offense seems to be running the same as you expect and everything looks on point, guys are being put into some different situations on offense to try some new things. The thing everyone notices the most is that deep passes are being worked in more than usual.

"I'm isolating guys. I want to give them the chance, so I'm taking more shots." New Lions offensive coordinator John Morton said on Monday. "Plus I want to I want to see who can do it, and then make the corrections, whether it's a technique error or something. So, I'm all about that, because we have the guys that can do it, so you got them, utilize them."

Morton is right, the Lions do have the guys who can go out for deep passes. Jameson Williams, Tim Patrick, Isaac TeSlaa, and Amon-Ra St. Brown all have that ability, but we haven't seen a lot of deep passes in this offense. Deep passes being passes of 20-plus air yards. Last year, Ben Johnson dialed up 48 pass attempts of 20-plus yards. That was 22nd in the NFL.

The thought process behind that is that Jared Goff can't do it. It's always been a narrative that's been attached to him. People will always say stuff like "Jamo has to slow down for the ball because Goff can't throw it far." Look, Goff is not John Elway throwing the Koosh Vortex out of the stadium, but he's not a noodle arm or anything like that either. Plus, a big reason Williams would slow down is that he had a hard time tracking the ball in the air in the first two seasons. It's something he's looked to have cleaned up recently.

Accuracy on the deep ball isn't an issue for Goff. He completed 41.7% of those passes. For comparison's sake, Josh Allen completed 37.9% of his deep passes, Patrick Mahomes had 29.6%, Matthew Stafford had 43.1%, and Russell Wilson had the best completion percent at 54%. Nobody is out there dialing these long shots and completing all of them. Even if that's what some want you to believe.

We're going to see how much of an addition this is to the offense soon. Don't expect Goff to be loading up for the deep pass 10 times a game or anything like that, but do expect the Lions to try to stretch the field more under Morton than they did with Johnson. As we know, chunk plays can change games pretty fast.
