There's no question on what the main event will be for the NFL world during the owners' Spring League Meeting in Minneapolis, which starts Tuesday and it's one that could slightly help the Dallas Cowboys' chances of winning the NFC East: The potential tush push ban.
In March, the NFL tabled the decision on whether or not to ban the variation of the quarterback sneak popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles through a rule proposed by the Green Bay Packers and it's expected to be a dramatic vote in the second go.
During the league's March meeting, the proposal was backed up by 16 of 32 teams, eight short of what the league needs to approve it. The question this week is if the NFL managed to lobby hard enough to change the minds of eight franchises.
"The league needs 24 votes, and Roger Goodell is a master at getting the votes he needs for the issues he wants," ESPN insider Adam Schefter said in April. "Rest be assured, they're going to be working to get those 24 votes before the main meeting in Minneapolis. And I believe, ultimately, they will get them."
It's a complex decision as the NFL has cited safety concerns that have largely gone unproven, while Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has admitted it's also an entertainment issue. But it's one that could have a significant impact on the way the Eagles run their offense.
It's difficult to say it would be a lot. Tush push or not, the Eagles have proven to be a great football team. Their success starts in the trenches with one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and is complemented with playmakers like Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith, all of whom are among the highest-paid players at their positions. Jalen Hurts has shown he's the perfect quarterback for them and a vaunted defense doesn't hurt.
Removing the highly successful short-yardage play from the equation will likely hurt the Eagles but would it be enough to knock off the NFC East crown from their heads? Probably not. Even with how much Hurts runs the sneak, he attempted only 35 such plays last season, per SIS. He ranked 10th in success rate. You have to assume going from the Tush Push to a regular sneak with the same personnel wouldn't be a massive drop-off in efficiency.
And still, the Cowboys will get all the help they can get to attain a seemingly impossible task. If the division race comes down to the wire, then the Eagles not being able to run their best play could indeed make a difference. But if Dallas is to win back the NFC East, bigger factors will have to make a difference, such as first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer hitting the ground running.
For now, we wait for the votes to come through later this week.
