For the fifth season in the row, the NFL will host at least one game on Christmas Day. Will that trend continue in 2025? As of right now, it certainly sounds like it will.
Even though Christmas is on a Wednesday this year, the NFL has a pair of exciting AFC matchups on tap for viewers across the country. The action will start at 1 p.m. ET with the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers. A few hours later, the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans will square off. Both games, which will be streamed on Netflix, could very well serve as a preview of what's to come in the playoffs.
Speaking to the media this Tuesday morning, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked about the NFL scheduling two games on Christmas Day. The outspoken personality believes the league will continue scheduling games on this holiday for the foreseeable future.
"Christmas Day is Christmas Day, and it doesn’t wait around for what day it’s on. We want to be there on Christmas Day," Jones said. "I would think the future is whatever day it’s on, we’re going to be there on Christmas."
Most football fans are more than OK watching NFL games every Christmas. After all, the product has been so entertaining the past few years.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell talked about scheduling games on Christmas during an April appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show." He made it clear the league will do whatever it can to maximize its ratings.
"I think we’ve looked for those opportunities where we can create an event out of it," Goodell said. “You know, holidays? That’s what we do. Thanksgiving has been our biggest day of football for years. You know, we saw it. I think we averaged 30 million people for the Christmas games over the last four or five years. So, for us, that’s where our fans are. I don’t ask permission for that. We go where the fans are. We’re going to go and we’re going to find a way to satisfy that."
