Any time you lose at home, it's tough. Dropping a heartbreaking game is also tough. Add in giving up 38 points on defense? Oh man. That made this week especially rough for the Seattle Seahawks defense. It was an especially frustrating day in Week 5 for Seahawks defensive tackle Leonard Williams, who was held without a formal quarterback hit for the first time this season.
The NFL just made his tough week even worse. Williams was included on the NFL's release of weekly fines — and it seems as though the league threw the book at him for a play from that Week 5 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The NFL's weekly release of fines for player conduct from the previous week dropped this afternoon and Williams was docked a whopping $46,371 fine for unnecessary roughness that featured the use of the helmet. That play came with 0:48 remaining in the third quarter of Seattle's 38-35 loss to Tampa. That fine total ties what Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was fined with after the Eagles' Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Ironically enough, the only fine higher thus far this season was also from that contest — when Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was fined $57,222 for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
It's the kind of news that can ruin a cross-country trip, which is what the Seahawks find themselves on ahead of a date with the 4-1 Jacksonville Jaguars tomorrow afternoon. But it isn't anything that a win in Week 6 won't help to make up for. Williams and the rest of the Seahawks defense will have their hands full with that assignment amid some of the injuries to the Seattle secondary.
One thing we know for sure? Williams will have a little extra aggression to take out on Jaguars offensive linemen after today's news from the league.
