Happy 77th birthday to 1980 NFL MVP and the Cleveland Browns all-time leader in passing yards, Brian Sipe!

Sipe was a 13th round selection of the Cleveland Browns out of San Diego State in the 1972 NFL Draft, taken with the 330th-overall pick. He didn’t appear in a game for the Browns until 1974, when he went 2-3 in five starts for a team that finished 4-10. 

Sipe made the postseason just once with the Browns, catching lightning in a bottle and having a career-year in 1980. He threw for career-highs yards (4,132) and touchdowns (30), both of which remain single-season records in Cleveland history to make the lone Pro Bowl of his career en route to MVP honors. But in his lone playoff game, Sipe went just 13-for-40 for 183 yards and three interceptions as the Browns fell 14-12 to the Oakland Raiders. 

The San Diego native played his entire NFL career with the Browns, posting 3,566 yards and 26 touchdowns in his final campaign with Cleveland. He’d play two seasons in the USFL before hanging up his cleats following the 1985 season.
