For the fourth-straight season, the first-overall pick in the NFL Draft is a quarterback.
After a 2-15 season and parting ways with 2025 starter Geno Smith, the Las Vegas Raiders selected Heisman Trophy winner and 2026 CFP champion Fernando Mendoza out of Indiana.
Mendoza played just one season in Bloomington under Curt Cignetti, but it will go down as one of the most famous seasons in college football history. The Hoosiers reached heights they’ve never seen, winning an outright Big 10 title for the first time and the program’s first ever national title.
The Miami native more than did his part, completing 72 percent of his passes for 3,535 yards and a nation-leading 41 touchdown passes while adding 276 yards and seven more touchdowns on the ground. His seventh rushing TD was arguably the biggest play of Indiana’s undefeated season as he rushed for 12 yards on 4th-and-4 to put the Hoosiers up two possessions with 9:18 to play in the CFP championship.
He’s set to join an organization that has had quarterback problems for the last several seasons, but will have Kirk Cousins on the roster and Tom Brady “behind the scenes” to help his development.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Mendoza is the 30th quarterback taken first-overall since the 1966 NFL Draft. With that being said, can you name ever No. 1-overall NFL Draft pick since that season?
Good luck!
