After it was proposed earlier in the offseason, the NFL has approved a rule change for a modified kickoff ahead of the 2025 regular season and it's one the Dallas Cowboys will benefit more from more than most teams in the league.
That's because the rule change is being approved with the goal of increasing the kickoff return rate, meaning more returns are ahead for first-team All-Pro return specialist KaVontae Turpin.
The rule itself will modify the starting spot for the offense in case of a touchback, moving up from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line. The change is expected to discourage teams from aiming for a touchback, which ended up becoming teams' go-to strategy last season.
The NFL has approved a modified kickoff rule change, though there have been no changes to the on-sides kick rules yet. Those will be considered later.

Despite the dynamic kickoff rules being introduced last year, return rate was on par with the previous five years. With the latest rule modification, that's expected to change, with an expected kickoff rate in the 60-70% range. When the rule was proposed, I outlined how that had everything to do with kicking teams being expected to avoid kicking for touchbacks:
Suddenly, the trade-off becomes much more difficult for kicking teams. Allowing the offense to start at the 35-yard line is less enticing because tackling them deeper into their territory becomes much more doable.
According to the NFL's Competition committee, the league is projecting the return rate to skyrocket to 60-70%. In the XFL, the kickoff return rate sat at 93% in 2020 (spot of the kick was different). The rule change still needs to be voted through but given the league's goals, it appears the change imminent.
In other words, this rule change will increase opportunities to return the football and while most NFL teams might be content with a 35-yard touchback, you know the Cowboys will want Turpin to take some chances. His speed is special and he proved it when acquiring his league-leading 904 kickoff return yards in 2024.
Expect him to position the offense in even better spots now that he'll get to show off his skills more often.
Turpin signed a three-year contract worth $13.5 million earlier this offseason. It's time for him to show the NFL world why.
