The NFL’s first tie of the season arrived in Week 4 — a reminder of just how long it's been since the Miami Dolphins had one of their own

The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets will square off in the first half of a Monday Night Football double-header tonight and try to match the excitement and fireworks that we've got last night when the Packers and Cowboys traded body blows for 70 minutes and wrapped up a 40-40 tie. Surely the football world will be cheering on the Dolphins and Jets avoiding another tie in Week 4, however.

Ties have become an increasingly more frequent experience each year after a 25-year stretch in which the league saw only a handful from 1988 through 2012 (7 ties over that time period). We've seen an average of one tie per year since 2016.

For the Miami Dolphins? It's been a few generations.

Dolphins last incidence of a tie came against their Week 4 opponent, the New York Jets

Miami's last tie came against the Jets back in 1981 at the Orange Bowl. The 28-28 result pushed Don Shula's Dolphins team to 4-0-1 on the season courtesy of an all-time performance from wide receiver Nat Moore — who finished the game with seven receptions for 210 receiving yards and two scores on the day. Miami's next most productive receiver catching passes from quarterback Don Strock had 37 receiving yards.

The Jets, who left the Orange Bowl 1-3-1 after the game, scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to force overtime before the teams traded possessions in overtime that included a Jets punt from the Dolphins 37-yard line and a missed 48-yard field goal by New York on the final play of the extra period.

There have been 25 total ties in the NFL since Miami's last one. So the law of averages would seem to suggest that the Dolphins are "due" for one sooner rather than later. And with how the first three weeks have unfolded, a tie sounds a little more attractive than it would have otherwise — but it surely wouldn't relieve any of the pressure in South Florida. The Dolphins need a win on Monday night. Let's hope they act like it and we'll let the Packers & Cowboys enjoy the novelty of this year's tie.
