With the New York Jets’ unlimited amount of flexibility in the upcoming NFL draft, they can go multiple routes with every one of their premium picks.
Despite that, though, there is one non-negotiable for Gang Green in Round 1.
“No matter what.”
That was the infamous text Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh exchanged during the 2024 NFL draft, making it a priority to land wide receiver Malachi Corley, whom the team ultimately traded up for.
While that pick didn’t work out, to put it lightly, Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn need to have that same mentality this year when it comes to landing a pass-catcher in the first round of this year’s NFL draft.
I know Jets fans are tired of hearing it, but the team needs pass-catching help… and they need it badly.
Behind Garrett Wilson, who led the team with 395 receiving yards in seven games last season, the Jets’ other rostered wide receivers have combined for 1,016 receiving yards and two touchdowns in their entire NFL careers, with Adonai Mitchell accounting for 765 of those yards and both touchdowns.
The Jets must do whatever it takes to secure a viable pass-catching option in Round 1 of the draft, even if it means trading up. The Dexter Lawrence trade could significantly reduce the Jets’ chances of landing a wide receiver with the 16th pick, as the Giants will replace the Bengals in the No. 10 slot.
New York shouldn’t be afraid to get bold. If they fall in love with someone like Ohio State’s Carnell Tate, who profiles as a perfect stylistic complement to Garrett Wilson, the team shouldn’t be afraid to move up from No. 16 to secure him. That is the beauty of owning all of these premium picks.
This year’s wide receiver class is very intriguing. While many consider it a “deep” position group, given the number of Day 2/3 prospects who offer tremendous upside, there is still a definitive top tier. Following Tate, Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson, and USC’s Makai Lemon, there is a sizeable drop.
Some may also include Indiana’s Omar Cooper and Washington’s Denzel Boston in that group, but according to the consensus big board, the only receivers ranked in the top 20 are Tate, Tyson, and Lemon.
The Jets must come away with a first-round receiver, no excuses.
