The Packers cleared plenty of cap space with their offseason moves. At the moment, the Packers have roughly $21.95M in cap space. Once the Nate Hobbs contract is off the books in June and the 2026 Rookie class is signed, it is expected that the Packers will have just under $14M in cap space. As a result, that money gives Green Bay the opportunity to extend a few key players like Christian Watson, Tucker Kraft, and Devonte Wyatt.
The Packers have a history of extending players during the summer. It typically happens right before the start of training camp. Last offseason, the Packers extended Zach Tom prior to camp. The year before they locked up Jordan Love, although that bled into the first week of camp. Watson, Kraft, and Wyatt have all proven their worth and importance to the Packers but they all have the same concern – injuries.
Tucker Kraft will be entering his fourth season in Green Bay. Kraft will also be coming off an ACL tear. Prior to Kraft going down against the Panthers, Kraft was emerging as one of the NFL’s premier tight ends. In 8 games last season, Kraft had 6 receiving touchdowns but the most eye opening stat was his ability to run after the catch and after contact. Kraft averaged 10.8 YAC and had a total of 115 yards after contact, which was the highest amongst all NFL tight ends.
Kraft was also voted a team captain and is a major voice in the Packers locker room. His value as a leader and a player is more than enough for the Packers to justify paying Kraft. The ultimate concern surrounding Kraft, at the moment, is his ACL recovery. It is more and more common to see players return from ACL injuries at full strength or better. A prime example is Christian Watson.
Christian Watson signed a one year extension shortly after his return from his ACL tear. He will be entering his fifth season in Green Bay. The Packers nailed the timing of Watson’s extension because his production, once he returned, was impressive. As a result, Watson has made it clear that he is worth a payday and even more so, that he is a critical piece to Matt LaFleur’s offense.
In 10 games in 2025, Watson had 35 receptions, 611 receiving yards, and 6 touchdowns. Watson averaged 17.5 yards per reception, 3rd most in the NFL. His ability to stretch the field is a massive. His biggest attribute is his speed. When Watson finds a lane, he is rarely caught. Just think of his 51 yard touchdown in Detroit or his 41 yard touchdown against the Bears where he caught a 6 yard slant and left the Bears secondary in the dust.
Devonte Wyatt might be the most interesting player that the Packers can extend. Wyatt will be entering his 5th season with the Packers. He is also 27 years old. The Packers might look to extend him on a 3 year deal. As a former first round pick, he has not exactly panned out. He has show flashed at times but he has not put together a full season. Devonte Wyatt is the Packers best interior pass rusher and he complimented Micah Parsons well.
Wyatt will be returning from a broken fibula and a torn ligament in his left ankle. Wyatt registered 4 sacks and 22 pressures in 10 games last season. The decision to extend Wyatt is so intriguing because it sounds like Gannon will be switching to a 3-4 defense. That means Wyatt might be asked to play nose tackle or line up on the edge. The Packers would love to keep Wyatt in town but it be on a slightly more team friendly deal.
