The Las Vegas Raiders' front office aggressively filled glaring roster needs on both sides of the ball early in free agency and has continued to make quieter yet needed additions to build depth elsewhere. Overall, it has been a solid offseason for the Raiders so far.
Las Vegas was focused on adding talent and experience in free agency and did so with the each signing that was made. With no shortage of money or needs, adding talent was added was Las Vegas' primary focus heading into free agency, but there were also other factors in those decisions.
In addition to talent and experience, essentially each of the Raiders' signings through free agency played for a winning team most recently, or at some point in their careers. This was not by happenstance, as the Raiders' front office believes this is helpful.
As Las Vegas looks to turn things around on the field, it will start by bringing in the right players. The Raiders' front office is looking for the right players on and off the field, as the rebuild they seek to complete will require an overhaul to the core of their locker room, as much as the roster itself.
The Raiders took everything into consideration when adding players in free agency, as this regime has appeared more deliberate in this regard than other regimes. Kubiak recently explained the overlooked fact that most of the Raiders' new additions came from winning teams.
"Accountable guys that obviously have produced on the field, coming from
winning teams, guys that football. It's easy to say that, but when you talk to the people that have coached them, talk to their college teams, you talk to their teammates," Kubiak said.
''What is this guy like when things get hard?' Because there's going to be adversity. It's not going to be perfect. So, you want guys that can handle things the right when it gets tough."
Las Vegas' front office has seemingly considered every significant detail of the players they are adding to the roster. Time will tell if the Raiders made the right moves in free agency, but at the very least, the Raiders' front office appears to have taken a more calculated approach than past regimes.
The Raiders will soon add another 10 players to the roster via the draft. This will be the next wave of talent that Las Vegas hopes will help revive the culture of its storied franchise. Like their free agents, many of the Raiders' draft picks will likely come from schools that have won a lot recently.
As the Raiders aim to build a roster and a team that wins more games, and becomes more accustomed to doing so consistently, the easiest way to do that is to add talented players who have experienced sustained success.
