In-season acquisitions are sometimes the difference in postseason play or missing out in the NFL. For the New Orleans Saints and plenty of other squads around the league, making moves during the games that matter will matter an incredible amount this season.

A fellow NFC team made a surprising move this past weekend. Other teams could benefit from the decision in the coming months.

George Odum released by 49ers

Odum was a special teams standout for San Francisco, but he underwent elbow surgery this offseason, according to Ian Rapoport. NFL teams will most likely give him a look during the season when it comes to adding depth and special teams value.

Odum had on Friday been placed on the non-football injury list, though the 49ers did not disclose the nature of his injury. With his release, the 49ers will save $1.7 million against the cap. -- Ninersnation.com

For New Orleans, depth is not impressive along their roster at most positions. Adding Odum would give them another special teams body who can also provide another option at safety on the depth chart. Odum has been an All-Pro selection twice in his pro career due to his special teams prowess.

This addition, whoever makes it during the season, wouldn't be flashy. Many fans wouldn't know who Odum is. That being said, the veteran defender could come through in the clutch at some point for a team that is looking for experienced help on special teams.

The details of Odum's offseason injury have not been released. He is expected to be ready for a return sometime in the next two months. We will see if the Saints take a look at him this season.
