The significance of the Packers releasing tight end Eli Wolf

Last week, the Green Bay Packers made a couple of quiet roster moves. More specifically, within their tight end room. The team signed USFL star Sal Cannella, who led all tight ends in receiving yards during the 2022 USFL season. Cannella would have been the 90th player on Green Bay's roster before training camp. According to NFL rules, teams can have up to 90 players before and during training camp. The team apparently is not done making moves. Green Bay released tight end Eli Wolf on Friday, which made way for an open roster spot. That could be more significant than people think.

Wolf was not a contributor for the Packers. He was originally claimed off of waivers by Green Bay from the Indianapolis Colts on May 12th. The 25-year old spent 2020 with the Baltimore Ravens and part of last season on the Colts' practice squad. Wolf spent very little time, if any, on the active roster. It is clear that he was not an important piece for Matt LaFleur's offense. But now, the Packers have an opportunity to add another impact player to help their team. Could it be a veteran receiver? Receivers Julio Jones and Odell Beckham Jr. are both still free agents. A veteran pass-rusher like Carlos Dunlap is still looking for a new team too. The Packers have roughly $17M in cap space.

The release of Eli Wolf gives the Green Bay Packers an opportunity to make their team even better this upcoming season. They can go out and find quarterback Aaron Rodgers one more veteran receiver. They could go find more pass-rush help. They have a lot of options and certainly enough cap space to make a move. Packers Training Camp starts Wednesday, July 27th.
