The Steelers Have Reportedly Made Decision On Russell Wilson's Contract

Russell Wilson has assumed the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback job after missing the first six games of the season due to injury.

The 36-year-old has played well, completing 63.1% of passes for 1,212 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions, with Pittsburgh going 4-1 in his five starts. Thus far, Wilson has provided a terrific return on investment for the cheap, one-year contract the Steelers gave him during the offseason.

As long as Wilson remains healthy, he's QB1 in Pittsburgh the rest of the way. Right now though, he'll be a free agent in the offseason, unless the Steelers work something out ahead of time.

According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, it doesn't appear that Wilson will look to re-sign with the Steelers during this season, and he has good reason not to. It could reduce how much money he'd still receive from the Denver Broncos.

"Per a source with knowledge of the situation, a new deal done during the 2024 season would complicate significantly the offset applicable to Wilson’s guaranteed pay from Denver this year. If Wilson did a deal during the season, some of that money would reduce what the Broncos owe him," Florio said.

A nine-time Pro Bowler, Wilson could still re-sign with the Steelers after the season ends and before free agency begins. If he doesn't, Pittsburgh could franchise tag him, which feels unlikely, or allow Wilson to hit free agency.

Considering he has still played effective football, Wilson will likely draw his fair share of interest on the open market, either as a bridge quarterback or as someone a team feels is an upgrade over what they already have as they attempt a playoff push in 2025.

Fields is also set to hit free agency in March, leaving Pittsburgh with an interesting decision at the quarterback position.
