The 'Walter Payton Man of the Year' quiz

Happy 80th birthday to 10-time Pro Bowler, four-time First Team All-Pro, two-time Defensive Player of the Year and four-time Super Bowl champion, “Mean” Joe Greene!

Playing his college football at North Texas (appropriately known as the Mean Green), Greene was the fourth-overall pick of the 1969 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’d go on to become known as one of the most intimidating defensive lineman of all-time, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1969 and never looking back. 

While he played in the era before sacks were officially tracked as a sack, Football Reference credits him with 77.5 sacks over the course of his 13-year NFL career. He was a key part of the famous “Steel Curtain,” defense of the 1970s, winning four Lombardi Trophies with the Terry Bradshaw-led Steelers.

He was also known for his role in a famous Coca-Cola commercial, where he tosses a game-worn jersey on a young fan who offers him a Coke and in 1979 was named the NFL Man of the Year (now known as the Walter Payton Man of the Year) for his charitable works.
