The 49ers came up just short again, resulting in the firing of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. The team's foundation should be intact next season, led by Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and Nick Bosa, but Kyle Shanahan and company have some needs to address on the offensive line and defense.

The Chiefs are trying to become the first NFL team ever to win three Super Bowls in a row. It's expected that they will add help at wideout, an area where the team struggled during the regular season, but even bigger questions are how the team will be able to retain defensive stars and free agents Chris Jones and L'Jarius Sneed. As Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce have shown again and again, those potential losses might not matter.

The Ravens were arguably the best team of the 2023 regular season, but they fell short in the AFC Championship vs. the Chiefs. The team could lose significant contributors on both sides of the ball, including Odell Beckham, Patrick Queen, and Justin Madubuike. Ultimately, the bigger question is whether Lamar Jackson can finally get over the hump in the playoffs.

Detroit made huge progress in 2023, finally winning a playoff game but falling just short in the NFC Championship. The team is still setup well with a young roster and winnable NFC North, plus they were able to keep coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn. Jared Goff has proven with a second organization that he's capable of making a playoff run.

The Bills roster has been all-in on a playoff run, particularly on defense, with multiple veterans nearing the end of their careers. Unfortunately, Buffalo has seen three consecutive sorely disappointing playoff runs, and are looking at some potentially major defensive losses like Vin Miller, Leonard Floyd, Micah Hyde, and DaQuan Jones. There will be even more pressure on Josh Allen to produce in 2024.

The Cowboys have gone 12-5 in three consecutive seasons under head coach Mike McCarthy, yet they have only one win over that time. Not only McCarthy but the entire roster is running out of time in what's seemingly a do-or-die season for Dak Prescott and company. They also have free-agent decisions this offseason, including Tyron Smith, Tony Pollard, and Stephon Gilmore.

Cincinnati had a lost season due to Joe Burrow's injury, and his job could be much more formidable upon his return with the potential losses of free agent wideouts Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd. The defense is also hoping to rebound after showing a leaky secondary last season.

Despite their late-season collapse, the Eagles retained head coach Nick Sirianni, but he still installed new coordinators. The city of Philadelphia is unlikely to be very patient even though the team is only one year removed from a Super Bowl appearance, and there's reason to be nervous with Jason Kelce's potential retirement, as well as big changes at running back and the defensive line. Jalen Hurts was paid last offseason, and is now out to prove his worth.

The addition of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio didn't help as much as hoped last season, and new coordinator Anthony Weaver faces challenges with the potential losses of Christian Wilkins, Jerome Baker, and Andrew Van Ginkel. The offense also faces some offensive line questions, but the presence of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle lessens the blow for Tua Tagovailoa.

Arguably no team had more momentum at the end of 2023 than the Packers, just barely falling short of upsetting San Francisco in the playoffs. It appears Jordan Love is a keeper, along with wideout Jayden Reed. New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is also a potential difference maker, but the team needs to add secondary help beyond Jaire Alexander.

The future looks bright in Houston with both Rookies of the Year (C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr.), along with head coach DeMeco Ryans' immediate impact. While the roster will lose some complementary pieces, they have the cap ammunition to make noise and further their progress.

For a roster that was mostly stripped down last offseason, the Rams surprised with a playoff appearance. They've made the most of some recent late draft picks, led by wideout Puka Nacua, while Matthew Stafford and Aaron Donald continue to play at a high level. Sean McVay remains one of the game's best coaches, but losing defensive coordinator Raheem Morris could hurt.

The Chargers made a giant splash by luring Jim Harbaugh from Michigan. Justin Herbert made the job attractive, but the Chargers face some very difficult cap decisions left over from the former regime. Even more challenging is getting over the Chiefs in the AFC West.

The Jets were one of the Super Bowl favorites in 2023 until Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles in Week 1. Rodgers will be 41 in December, making a rebound even more challenging. The team does have a promising young core with Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, Quinnen Williams, and Sauce Gardner, but Rodgers will need to show some major signs of his old self.

The Jags regressed after a surprising AFC South title in 2022, with Trevor Lawrence and company failing to take another step forward. The team has some big offseason decisions to make with Josh Allen and Calvin Ridley headed toward free agency.
Brad Rempel / USA Today Sports Images
Head coach Kevin O'Connell showed he has some major coaching chops, keeping his Vikings competitive despite injuries to Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson. It would be a surprise to see Cousins go elsewhere in free agency, but there still is some risk. Franchise pass rusher Danielle Hunter is also a free agent.

Cleveland made the playoffs despite Deshaun Watson playing only six games due to injury. More concerning is that Watson struggled when he did play. His contract has severely handicapped the team from spending elsewhere, though the team's strong performance on both sides of the ball in 2023 showed they have potential if the quarterback can rebound.

The Falcons rehired Raheem Morris to run the squad, but the next order of business will be finding a quarterback. The situation will be a good one with some exciting weapons like Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts, which former head coach Arthur Smith forgot were present at times last season.

The Colts were competitive last season despite losing rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson to injury, as new head coach Shane Steichen proved his worth. However, the roster remains in development mode as they try to build around Richardson and figure out if he's an NFL starter.

The questions for the Bears are rampant, owning both the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and Justin Fields' contract. It's an enviable but highly consequential decision for GM Ryan Poles, along with potential lame-duck head coach Matt Eberflus. The team also has loads of cap space, with high-priced players like Eddie Jackson, Yannick Ngakoue, and Cody Whitehair coming off the books.
Nathan Ray Seebeck / USA Today Sports Images
Derek Carr didn't bring the electricity Saints fans hoped after he was added last offseason, but the hope is that new coordinator Klint Kubiak and better health will help him turn the corner. Head coach Dennis Allen could be entering a make-or-break season, and the defense is loaded with veterans who might only have one run left in them like Cameron Jordan, Demario Davis, and Tyrann Mathieu.

Despite Tom Brady's retirement, Tampa Bay won the lowly NFC South again, but they didn't exactly do it in impressive fashion. It seems likely the Bucs will bring back Baker Mayfield after a strong rebound, though fellow free agents Mike Evans, Antoine Winfield Jr., and Devin White are also potential departures.
Matt Kartozian / USA Today Sports Images
Seattle's failure to make the playoffs cost Pete Carroll his job, and the defense could be looking at big changes with Leonard Williams, Bobby Wagner, and Jordyn Brooks now free agents as former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald takes over as head coach. It appears Geno Smith will get another opportunity as the starting quarterback, though adding a young option in the draft is a strong possibility.

The Raiders finished 2023 with a bang under interim head coach Antonio Pierce. He earned the permanent position with his players' blessings, but the challenges are enormous with a void at quarterback and a generally weak roster in a tough AFC West division.
Michael Chow / USA Today Sports Images
Kyler Murray's successful return from knee surgery led to some excitement in the second half of 2023, but the roster still has a steep hill to climb. The potential losses of Marquise Brown and Budda Baker, along with a brutal NFC West division, give the Cardinals long odds for a Super Bowl.
Charles LeClaire / USA Today Sports Images
Few head coaches in the history of the game have been more consistent winners than Mike Tomlin. He continues to produce winning records lately despite poor quarterback play. It's an area the team hopes to address with new coordinator Arthur Smith, along with a potential addition at quarterback. The defense still has the talent to prop up the team with T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward, and Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Sean Payton's team made progress last season after a very rough start, but they're tough to project early in the offseason without knowing who will start under center in 2024. The roster could go any number of directions as Payton puts his stamp on the team.
Geoff Burke / USA Today Sports Images
The Commanders have optimism with a new ownership group and head coach Dan Quinn, but it's a clear rebuild with no set quarterback and a defense that's likely to see major offseason changes. Quinn knows the division well as the former Cowboys defensive coordinator, but it remains to be seen what state the roster will be in entering 2024.
Eric Canha / USA Today Sports Images
The Pats finally moved on from Bill Belichick after an embarrassing season, and promoted head coach Jerod Mayo has his work cut out for him. It's clear the team needs a new starting quarterback, offensive weapons, and multiple changes on the offensive line, to start the rebuild.
Denny Simmons / USA Today Sports Images
Tennessee made the surprising move of firing head coach Mike Vrabel, and could face monumental personnel changes for the second consecutive offseason with Derrick Henry a free agent. Head coach Brian Callahan will be tasked with developing Will Levis entering the quarterback's sophomore season.
Brad Penner / USA Today Sports Images
The Giants weathered a big storm last season with major injuries, led by quarterback Daniel Jones. His poor play before getting hurt is perhaps an even greater concern, and the team has decisions to make with multiple prominent free agents led by Saquon Barkley.
Bob Donnan / USA Today Sports Images
It sure looks bleak in Carolina. The team traded away loads of draft capital for the rights to first-overall draft choice Bryce Young, who was outplayed-handedly by second pick C.J. Stroud. They're now left without much to work with in the 2024 draft, and has to make free agent decisions on several major contributors led by Brian Burns. New head coach Dave Canales will likely need time to shape the team.
