The Kansas City Chiefs kick off training camp for the 2025 season on July 21 and fans can't wait to see the team in action (albeit camp action) again. The Chiefs will have plenty of decisions to make before camp gets underway though as they try to trim their roster down.
The Chiefs might still try to add some help in the form of a bigger name before camp gets underway and that could force their hand when cutting other players. Let's look at four possible cut candidates for the Chiefs ahead of training camp.
While Hunt isn't as new of an addition as the other guys on this list, he's been back with the Chiefs for less than a year. Of course, Hunt was originally drafted by the Chiefs in 2017 but was released after he was caught on video kicking a woman in 2018.
After spending five years in Cleveland, Hunt returned to Kansas City at the beginning of the 2024 season and was thrown back into the starting lineup when Isiah Pacheco went down with an injury. While Hunt performed admirably, the Chiefs could use an upgrade at running back and if they can get their hands on a decent option before camp, don't be surprised if Hunt gets the boot.
Chiefs fans have never felt optmistic about Elijah Mitchell making the Chiefs roster. As mentioned in Hunt's section, Pacheco is the starter and if another player is brought in, other players could be disposable. Mitchell will only be a RB4 if he does end up making the team and that's why he could be an easy option to move on from.
Mitchell spent three years with the 49ers and despite a sensational rookie year in 2021, his numbers have gone downhill ever since, largely due to injuries. The guy hasn't been able to stay healthy and missed the entirety of the 2024 season, meaning he hasn't played in a game since 2023. That's not going to help his stock in an already crowded running back room.
Robert Tonyan is definitely most known for the time he spent in Green Bay catching passes from Aaron Rodgers. In 2020, he put up a career-high in yards (586) and touchdowns (11) but hasn't come anywhere close to those numbers in the following years.
The Chiefs signed him this offseason as tight end depth but even then, fans didn't think much of the signing. He could end up sticking around due to the Chiefs' tendency to keep four tight ends on the roster (meaning he'd be TE4 behind Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, and Jared Wiley) but no one would be surprised if his time with the Chiefs came to an end before it ever really began.
The Chiefs brought in Janarius Robinson in the offseason as depth at defensive end but he's already buried on the depth chart. Considering he hasn't tallied more than a sack in a season during his NFL career, the Chiefs likely won't hesitate to move on from him if they find a more appealing player to bring in instead.
