We are less than three weeks away from the beginning of the Philadelphia Eagles' training camp. The reigning Super Bowl champions are eager to defend their title, and the Philadelphia faithful cannot wait for the return of their football team.
With a championship roster already manufactured, the Eagles will not have many surprises when it comes to their team this season. Mostly every position already has a dedicated starter, and there will be very few position battles to watch in camp.
Despite the stakes being low, that will not discourage Eagles 'fans from diving headfirst into their team. Finding diamonds in the rough and attaching themselves to long-shot players is a trait that makes Philadelphia sports unique.
The following are three players that deserve that extra look when it comes to training camp.
Entering his third season in the NFL, Tyler Steen has a lot to prove. The Eagles drafted Steen in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft to bolster their offensive line depth. Steen has played in 28 games throughout his first two seasons; however, he has only started three.
The offensive lineman had the opportunity to win the starting right guard job last year at training camp, but lost out to Mekhi Becton, a former first-round pick of the New York Jets. Becton parlayed that starting job into a Super Bowl title and a huge contract this past offseason.
With Becton out the door, the job is Steen's to lose. The Eagles have other interior offensive linemen who can compete with him for the job, but Steen's time with the organization should give him the advantage.
The starting right guard position is one of the few spots that are open in camp this year for Philadelphia. Watching Steen compete for the role will be one to watch for the Eagles this upcoming season.
A native of South Jersey, the Eagles selected Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
With their QB1 spot locked up for the foreseeable future, general manager Howie Roseman decided to shake up the quarterback room this offseason. Trading last season's backup, Kenny Pickett, to the Cleveland Browns in return for Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The Eagles then promoted third-string Tanner McKee to the backup job. Fast forward to the draft, and Philly then added McCord.
While there won't be a battle for the number two spot on the depth chart, watching how McCord handles his opportunities in camp and preseason action will be fun to watch. Heading into last season, most fans enjoyed the chance to watch McKee thrive in his playing time. With McCord now in that same role, seeing his potential growth could be a benchmark for the coaching staff's abilities to develop talent.
Many have often wondered if the Eagles would explore moving McKee in a deal with a quarterback-needy team. With Thompson-Robinson and McCord under contract, that likelihood increases ever so slightly. If McCord can showcase his abilities enough, that might help make that decision easier for Roseman.
Fitting the underdog theme of Philadelphia, look no further than Shunderrick Powell. The undrafted rookie signed with the Eagles looking to find his way on the roster this upcoming season. With Saquon Barkley heading the running back room, Powell will have to compete with Will Shipley, A.J. Dillon, and Avery Williams to try and make the team.
The 5-foot-7 running back from Central Arkansas will likely earn comparisons with former Eagles running back Darren Sproles. While he does not fit the traditional NFL role, Powell can be dynamic in open space. Given the chance to return punts, he could potentially open the door for him to find a special teams role with the Eagles.
Powell will need to flash with the limited chances he will likely have in training camp this month. Showcasing his talents on the field can help him catch the eye of the coaching staff. A potential practice squad spot would buy him more time to show the league what he can do.
Never count out a long shot in the city of Brotherly Love. Powell can be a fun player to watch as the Eagles break camp at the end of July.
