One of the biggest struggles the Kansas City Chiefs have had during their 0-2 start has been being without their No. 1 wide receiver Rashee Rice.
Rice finished his rookie season strong in 2023, then appeared poised to become one of the best WRs in the NFL in 2024 before sustaining a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. In July he received a sentence regarding his his involvement in a multi-vehicle crash during the 2024 NFL offseason, which led to getting suspended for the first six games of the 2025 regular season.
During pregame warmups ahead of their eventual loss to Philadelphia on Sunday , wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Tyquan Thornton, as well as tight end Travis Kelce, wore matching shirts with graphics of Rice and the phrase "Free 4."

While speaking to the media on Monday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked if that was something he felt he needed to address with the players.
"I've seen it since, I didn't see it then (before the game), but I would tell you I know these guys love Rashee," Reid said. "They feel for him sitting out. I think it's no more than that. I just think that those guys, they love the kid and want him to feel a part of it in their own way. I really don't think it's anything more than that."
Some had confused, and even irritated, responses to the shirts. It wasn't the fact that they were supporting Rice, but the message to "free him" was odd. Rice certainly deserved the suspension he got, and it was a fair one.
Perhaps the wording could have been a little more well-thought-out, but at the end of the day it was a harmless gesture for a teammate that they can't wait to get back onto the field. Rice will return in the Chiefs' Week 7 home matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
