New York Giants fans may have already seen enough of quarterback Russell Wilson, who floundered in Week 1. But an AFC team hopes the club will keep playing the struggling passer.
The QB completed 17-of-37 passes for 168 yards in Sunday's 21-6 road loss to the Washington Commanders. However, on Monday, Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed Wilson will start in Week 2 at the Dallas Cowboys at 1 p.m. ET (Fox). The decision benefits the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wilson signed a one-year, $10.5M deal with the Giants this offseason. That counts toward the team's compensatory draft pick formula.
The equation is complicated, but simply put, if a team loses more players who qualify as compensatory free agents during the NFL offseason, the team is eligible to be awarded compensatory picks in the following NFL Draft.
Per Over the Cap, the Steelers have five players who count toward their compensatory pick formula: Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr., New York Jets QB Justin Fields, Wilson, Miami Dolphins right guard James Daniels and Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Donte Jackson.
Wilson's departure gives the Steelers a fifth-round pick, even if he doesn't hit all his incentives this season. If he plays to the full value of his contract, it could turn into a third-round selection. That's because the compensatory pick formula takes the contract value and playing time of the free agent acquired into consideration.
High draft picks are critical for the Steelers, who should be preparing for life without quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason.
Rodgers, 41, looked like he's not done yet in Sunday's 34-32 road win over the New York Jets, tossing four touchdown passes. But he has already indicated the 2025 season will be his last.
In Tankathon's latest mock draft, the Steelers take Penn State QB Drew Allar (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) with pick No. 18. Having high draft picks would certainly help Pittsburgh build around a rookie QB.
So, Steelers fans, root for Wilson, despite him posting a below-average 47.9 QBR in 11 games with the team last season.
