The Kansas City Chiefs have a pretty loaded cornerback room entering the summer and while, yes, this is good for the team, it's not necessarily great for some of the roster-bubble players at the position. Nazeeh Johnson, a seventh-round pick in 2022, could be playing for his roster spot this summer, as the Chiefs added Nohl Williams in this year's draft and he's already jumped Johnson on the depth chart.
Johnson probably isn't the most well-known name on the Chiefs roster considering where he was drafted and him mostly being a depth guy but he has added value to the team. This is especially important to add when taking into account that Johnson wasn't picked until the seventh round in 2022. He appeared in 11 games as a rookie in 2022 and appeared in all three playoff games. He missed 2023 due to an injury but in 2024, he appeared in all but one regular season game.
The Chiefs went to work in revamping the cornerback position this offseason, which is good news for the fans but not good news for guys like Johnson hoping to stick with the team that drafted him. Jaylen Watson is back after missing last year with an injury, Kristian Fulton signed with the Chiefs this offseason, and of course Trent McDuffie will be back as a starter.
Behind those guys are Nohl Williams, Joshua Williams, and Chris Rolland-Wallace. While Johnson could certainly make it onto the roster as a third-stringer, he's going to have to play hard this summer and prove why he's worth keeping around. He's only signed through this year so if the Chiefs can move onto a cheaper option who flashes in training camp and preseason, they very well might do so.
Some of those less expensive options include Jacobe Covington, Darius Rush, and Eric Scott, all of whom could give the former seventh-rounder a run for his money.
The good news for Johnson is that he's a proven commodity for this team and can multiple positions, both of which could help him keep his job. The staff is well-aware of what he can do at this point but considering he's missed time due to an injury and the position has only gotten stronger, he needs to stand out this summer if he wants to make the team.
