Going into the 2022 NFL season, the Washington Commanders seem uncertain who the full time starting running back will be. The answer right now would seem like 24-year-old Antonio Gibson who the Commanders used the 66th pick on in the 2020 NFL draft. Gibson is coming off an 1,000 yard (seven touchdown) rushing season that also saw him catch 42 passes for 294 yards and three additional scores. Gibson has said he feels confident going into his third season with Washington. He also cited fixing mistakes such as always looking to create a big play, and slimming down to improve his quickness this season. The 29-year-old J.D. McKissic will most likely start the season as the number two back. McKissic rushed for 212 yards (2 TD), while catching 43 passes for 397 yards and two touchdowns.

Then there’s the third option rookie who deserves more hype: Brian Robinson Jr.

Brian Robinson Jr.

Taken with 98th pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the Washington Commanders got themselves a steal. After four years at Alabama that saw him wait behind players like behind Damien and Najee Harris, Robinson finally got his chance as the lead man. With his sights set on the NFL, he made sure to take advantage of his opportunity. Robinson rushed 271 times (5th in all of college football) for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns. This included his 26 carry 204 yard rushing performance against the Cincinnati Bearcats in the CPF Semifinal. The 204 yard rushing performance was the most in school history for a bowl game. He also showed versatility by catching 35 passes for 296 yards and two more touchdowns last season. Despite having a great season, there were 5 running backs taken before Robinson heard his name called. Robinson, who Commanders running backs coach Randy Jordan proclaims is a perfectionist, will look to make a mark his rookie year, while also staying patient in the process.

At times last season. Robinson looked unstoppable in the red zone. With his 6’1 bruising frame, he can overpower defenders who get in his way. Check out his four touchdown performance against Ole Miss:

If you were left wanting more, how about the aforementioned historically dominant 204 yard game against Cincinnati in the CFP Semifinal. Robinson didn’t even score a touchdown in this game, but continuously fought for yards, and showed he’s a force in open space:

Preseason Presence:

A versatile back out of The University of Alabama, Robinson made his 6’1 presence felt in his first preseason game.

His explosiveness and pass catching abilities were put on display in his first two touches of the game:

This short sequence showcased the dynamic player the Commanders were able to snag late in the third round. Robinson can explode and find open holes, and also make things happen when thrown the ball in short yardage. A skillset that is not only valuable, but seemingly required by running backs in todays NFL.

His physical play was put on display for Commanders and football fans to see.

Robinson rushed six times for 26 yards, and caught two passes for 15 yards. He was able to find the end zone in the second quarter on a short one yard run:

Robinson also received high praise from his head coach after the preseason game:

Bottom Line:

Although there are reports that Gibson is taking some second and third team reps, he will most likely start the season as the starter. It should and likely will be Gibsons job to lose, but he has a high tide looking over his shoulder. Brian Robinson Jr. is explosive, physical, and hungry for an opportunity. He waited years to be the top dog at Alabama, but the secrets now out, Brian Robinson Jr. is really damn good.
